Stop Cruelty to Ducks by Banning Foie Gras

Foie gras

Target: Oregon Senate President Peter Courtney

Goal: Ban foie gras in Oregon

The production of foie gras involves the forced feeding of ducks in order to give them abnormally large and fatty livers. The ducks are then slaughtered and their fatty livers are turned into a gourmet pate that is coveted for its rich, buttery flavor. This practice is appallingly cruel and has no place in a civilized society. In order to prevent this unnecessary cruelty, the state of California began a ban on foie gras in 2012. Other states should follow suite with California in banning this inhumane hors’d’oeuvres. Please tell the Oregon legislature that it needs to take action in banning this abhorrent food.

The force feeding used in the production of foie gras has horrible consequences for the ducks that include grossly enlarged livers that no longer function and scarring of the esophagus. The ducks’ stomachs undergo so much expansion that the duck becomes nearly immobile. All of this torture occurs for many days preceding the ultimate slaughter of the duck. This is an incredibly barbaric way to produce food and most people would not condone these methods.

A wildlife pathologist with the NYDEC, Dr. Ward Stone, has conducted many autopsies on ducks that have actually died as a result of the force-feeding. He states, “…the short tortured lives of ducks raised for Foie Gras is well outside the norm of farm practice. Having seen the pathology that occurs from Foie Gras production, I strongly recommend that this practice be outlawed.”

The production forced-feeding of ducks involved in the production of foie gras is a cruel and inhumane practice. Foie gras must be outlawed in order to stop the needless suffering of so many ducks. Please urge Oregon legislators to take measures to ban this cruel food.

Senate President Peter Courtney:

The production of foie gras is a cruel and barbaric practice that involves the forced feeding of ducks in order to give them abnormally large and fatty livers. During this process the ducks’ stomachs undergo so much expansion that they become nearly immobile. The torture goes on for many days until the ducks are eventually slaughtered, if they have not already died from the force feeding process. This practice has no place in a civilized society.

Foie gras has already been banned in the European Union and in the state of California. I urge you to take action within the state senate to ban its use and production in the state of Oregon.
