Target: Tom Vilsack, United States Secretary of Agriculture
Goal: Stop subsidies for factory farms that contribute to global warming and pollution while abusing animals
Most dairy products consumed in the United States are produced at huge factory farms that harm the environment and cause animals to be treated inhumanely. The prices on these unsustainable products are kept artificially low through huge government subsidies that divert tax dollars to corporate farms. Factory farms use these subsidies to increase their profits at the expense of the environment and animals. If these subsidies were removed, the true market price for dairy products would result in less consumption of these products, benefiting the environment and reducing the cruel treatment of dairy cows. We should tell our government to end these subsidies.
Dairy farms produce huge amounts greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming. Runoff from the farms flows into rivers, lakes, and streams, making the farms a leading cause of water pollution. This pollution can lead to blue green algae blooms that can make people who come into contact with the water very sick.
By subsidizing this type of industry we are using the tax dollars of hard working people to harm the environment and speed up global warming. By simply removing these subsidies we would allow the true market value of dairy products to reduce their consumption and leave more tax funds available for social welfare programs, conservation initiatives, and reducing the national debt.
Let’s tell our government to stop using our valuable tax dollars to fund factory farms which harm or environment and cause cruelty to animals. It’s time to start using this money for things that benefit our society and the environment. We should allow the market to dictate the price of dairy products rather than giving our tax dollars to these unsustainable factory farms.
Dear Mr. Vilsack:
For many years the price of dairy products has been kept artificially low, through the use of subsidies taken from the pockets of taxpayers and given to corporate dairy farms. This diverts public money from other important programs. Additionally, it causes people to consume more dairy products than they otherwise would.
It is time for our nation to stop this practice. These types of farms are tremendously harmful to the environment. We should let our market system decide the price of dairy products rather than using the money of hard working taxpayers to subsidize this unsustainable industry.
I strongly urge you to take action to eliminate subsidies from unsustainable dairy farms.
