Applaud Haiti Clean Energy Development

Target: EarthSpark President Allison Archambault

Goal: Thank non-profit for bringing affordable clean energy to the Haitian town of Les Anglais

Where homes were previously lit by candlelight and kerosene lamps, Washington-based non-profit EarthSpark is providing clean, reliable electricity. Taking advantage of the falling costs of solar equipment, the project uses solar panels to produce electricity at a lower cost than before, when residents had to pay twenty-five cents each time they charged their cellular phones. Implementation of cost-effective micro-grid technology with smart meters improves energy efficiency by helping residents reduce energy consumption at peak times.

Like 75 percent of Haitians and 1.2 billion people worldwide, the residents of Les Anglais previously lived without access to electricity in their homes. The addition of this solar project is a major improvement to quality of life, enabling more children to study, businesses to stay open, and better health, according to National Geographic Daily News.

This energy initiative can also give local agriculture a much needed boost. Haitians import 60 percent of the produce they consume, while a lack of processing facilities leaves most local produce to rot. With a breadfruit facility in the works, EarthSparks aims to extend the shelf-life of the nutritious starchy fruit, which normally goes bad after just 3 days, by turning it into chips or flour. The organization plans to expand use of micro-grid electricity to improve quality and lower costs for existing agricultural processing facilities.

By signing the petition below, you can thank EarthSpark for reducing serious energy poverty with minimal impact on the environment.

Dear Ms. Archambault,

I am writing to thank you for your efforts to reduce energy poverty without degrading the natural environment in Les Anglais, Haiti. Your innovative combination of solar panels, smart meters, and an independent micro-grid represents a practical, cost-effective strategy to improve quality of life overall.

You also demonstrate key leadership with this project, which may end up serving as a model to bring electricity to other energy impoverished areas around the world. You have helped create a sustainable business model and are bringing about transformations in agriculture. I wish you continued success with this initiative.
