Support Ban on Horse-Drawn Carriages

Target: Mayor Bill De Blasio

Goal: Support New York mayor-elect Bill De Blasio’s campaign promise to end horse drawn carriage rides, and urge him to follow through with his decision

Bill De Blasio, who will soon be sworn in as Mayor of New York City, has made a campaign promise to end the city’s popular horse drawn carriage rides in favor of a more humane antique-style car ride with a clean motor that will be equally as tourist-friendly. He has claimed the ban will take place as soon as his first day in office. “First day I’m Mayor, I will ban them,” he has said.

De Blasio said in response to a question about the ban, “it will not be my first act, but it’ll be something I’ll do right away and absolutely I’ve made that pledge and I believe that the existence of the horse-carriage industry in this city is no longer appropriate. I don’t think it’s fair to animals. I don’t think it’s something necessary for this city.”

Carriage rides are currently offered in Midtown and throughout Central Park, mainly for tourists and out-of-town vacationers. The carriages are lined up on the streets outside of the park, the horses standing strapped in their own filth with their necks bent and their heads down. They watch passersby with red, tired eyes. Their coats are patchy and many of them have ridiculous and cumbersome feathered decorations on their heads.

Not only has De Blasio promised to end the inhumane treatment of these horses and ban the carriage business altogether, but all the present carriage horses will be given a humane retirement to sanctuaries. For many New York City residents who have been campaigning to end the abuse of carriage horses for years, this shift towards a more humane policy can seem like a miracle. Please sign this petition to urge Mayor De Blasio to follow through with his campaign promise, and ban carriage rides in New York City.

Dear Mayor De Blasio,

I am writing this letter to thank you in advance for your ban on horse-drawn carriage rides in New York City. The practice is cruel and inhumane, and the horses visibly suffer from all the hard labor they are forced to do while strapped in their own filth.

I would like to not only thank you, but to urge you sincerely to please follow through with your campaign promise to end the carriage rides and give the horses a humane retirement in sanctuaries. These animals deserve to live the rest of their lives in peace and tranquility after the cruelty they have endured at our hands.

Thank you for your consideration of these animals, and please continue your work to aid abused and helpless creatures in need.

  1. Send the poor working horses to a legit sanctuary.. Do not send them to slaughter.
