Ban Animal Abusers from Owning Pets

Target: Nevada State Senator Mark Manendo

Goal: Pass important legislation that would ban convicted animal abusers from owning pets

In Nevada, individuals convicted of animal abuse, a felony in the state, are allowed to continue to own pets. This has led to countless incidents of dogs and cats being beaten and even killed by repeat offenders. Nevada State Senator Mark Manendo has introduced a bill that would ban animal abusers from owning pets. We must support Senator Manendo and ensure that this bill becomes a law.

According to the Review Journal, Senator Manendo’s bill would require “Nevadans convicted of intentional acts of animal cruelty” to add their names to a “public registry and be banned from owning pets.” Manendo, a dog owner, was propelled to develop the bill after learning of an especially horrific case of animal abuse that occurred earlier in the month. The case involved a young man who stabbed and killed his family’s dog with a serrated knife. According to the Huffington Post, the young man stated, “I just wanted to stab the dog so I sat on the floor and cut its neck.” Senator Manendo’s proposal would ensure that this brutal individual never owns another pet.

The animal abuser registry would be operated by various non-profit groups in order to promote efficiency and save money for the government. This registry would then be provided to all shelters, shops and organizations that supply people with pets. Every prospective pet owner would then be cross referenced with the registry before a pet could be taken home.

By signing the petition below, you will help encourage Senator Mark Manendo to do everything in his power to pass this bill and ban convicted animal abusers from ever owning a pet in the future.

Dear Senator Mark Manendo,

Thank you for introducing a bill that would ban convicted animal abusers from ever owning a pet in the future. There are countless incidents of dogs and cats being beaten and even killed by repeat offenders and your efforts will help to stop this preventable cruelty from occurring.

Your idea of allowing non-profit organizations to develop an animal abuser registry is nothing short of brilliant. This will help encourage your fellow Nevada state legislators to pass this bill without worrying about the financial cost to the government.

Please do everything in your power to see that this bill is passed and animals are protected from cruelty and torture at the hands of convicted offenders.
