Target: Lockheed Martin spokesperson Gordon Johndroe
Goal: Congratulate Lockheed Martin for pulling its donation to the Boy Scouts of America because of its anti-gay policies
Many boys in the United States are, at one time, part of the Boy Scouts of America. This organization, which teaches boys life skills, would be a fantastic organization for any kid to be part of–if the Boy Scouts of America was not a perpetrator of anti-gay policies. While it has recently decided to open its doors to gay youth, the organization still refuses to allow gay individuals to be troop leaders or adult Eagle Scouts. It is within the rights of the Boy Scouts of America to decide on its own policies and how the policies will be implemented, but that does not mean the public will support them. In terms of donations, this means that big companies that donate a lot to the Boy Scouts of America might even pull their donations.
Lockheed Martin, a worldwide aerospace and technology company, did exactly that. Lockheed issued a statement that said it wants to support organizations that value diversity. Even though the Boy Scouts of America has stopped closing its doors to gay youth, the organization as a whole will not tolerate gay leaders and many of the troops still remain incredibly homophobic.
Commend Lockheed Martin for truly being a world leader. By valuing diversity and making a stand against intolerant companies, Lockheed is proving to the world that acceptance is a critical value to instill in the leaders of tomorrow.
Dear Gordon Johndroe,
Recently, you issued a statement declaring that Lockheed Martin will no longer donate to the Boy Scouts of America. The reason given was that Lockheed Martin only donates to nonprofits that foster diversity among their ranks. I want to thank you and your company for this decision. Sometimes individual people can feel powerless or unsupported, but when a big company like Lockheed Martin pulls its generous donation from a nonprofit, it sends a clear message: homophobic policies and procedures will not be tolerated.
Nor should they be. If the Boy Scouts of America is really invested in teaching its members to be respectful and considerate, it needs to start teaching them that there is no limit to acceptance. The Boy Scouts has made recent strides by letting gay boys join its ranks, but its acceptance stops short of allowing gay scout leaders or Eagle scouts to be counted among its numbers.
Because of this, Lockheed Martin’s decision to pull its donations is truly admirable. It sends a clear message to the Boy Scouts of America that implores it, in no uncertain terms, to take a good hard look at itself and its values. If the Boy Scouts of America wants to be an accepting organization, it needs to eradicate its anti-gay policies and attitudes at every level of its organization, not just at the bottom level.
Thank you for being willing to speak out against the negative policies in a nonprofit that your company has previously donated to. It will go a long way toward helping to change the intolerant Boy Scouts of America.
