Save Important Bald Eagle Habitat

Target: Harold Peaks, Project Development Team Leader for the Federal Highway Administration

Goal: Stop the Federal High Administration from destroying the Alaska Chilkat Bad Eagle Preserve, an important habitat for thousands of nesting eagles

The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve was created in the 1980’s to shelter and preserve the world’s largest concentration of bald eagles and their habitat. Unfortunately, the Alaska Department of Transportation is looking into destroying parts of the preserve to widen and level the byway that runs through the preserve. Going through with the plan would mean that trees which eagles like to perch on would be cut down, nesting areas would be disturbed, and salmon runs that eagles depend on for food would be degraded.

Nearly every portion of the preserve is in use by the eagles throughout the year, therefore people are not allowed near the preserve because it would put stress on the eagles. Another unique feature of the preserve is the large salmon population that supplies the eagles with food.

Everything about this preserve has been protected so that the eagles can live and breed comfortably. Widening and straightening the highway will cause considerable damage to the eagle preserve and compromise their way of living. Sign the petition below to oppose this misguided construction project.

Dear Mr. Peaks,

The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve is a historical landmark that has housed thousands of eagles for years. Residents and tourists who drive along the highway are always impressed by the beautiful preserve, which is a wonderful place for eagles to nest, feed, and perch without any humans disturbing them or stressing the animals. Reports have warned that the Federal Highway Administration’s proposed expansion of the byway within the preserve will compromise parts of this important habitat. We urge you not to let this happen.

Your project will require your team to cut down trees that the eagles use to rest on. It will also affect the salmon that eagles depend on for food. Environmental groups have suggested that if you at lease reduce the highway speed limit from 55 mph to 50 mph, it would help keep the eagle habitat intact.

Please work to stop the byway project from interfering with this historical preserve for eagles.
