Urge Obama To Improve Relations With Cuba

Target: President Obama

Goal: End the trade embargo against Cuba

Conversations between the U.S. and Cuba have taken an unusually diplomatic turn in recent weeks, a major difference from the previously hostile attitudes held for over 50 years. Although the White House currently denies any change in the relationship between the two nations, Cuban president Raul Castro has stated that recently they have had “conversations on topics of mutual interest,” and a new-found effort at cooperation has been noted by journalists and news organizations. Now is the time to lift the embargo on Cuba.

U.S.-Cuban relations deteriorated into hostility after the Cuban revolution in 1959, when Fidel Castro took power and created a Communist state. Since 1960, the U.S. has held an embargo on Cuba and treated the nation as a political enemy. While this situation may have been reasonable during the Cold War, we are now many years past the time when it made any kind of sense. China is also a Communist state, and yet we trade with them as much as any Democracy. The embargo is outdated, and any remaining hostility is simply unnecessary.

Since relations have already improved with Cuba accidentally, President Obama should take this opportunity to extend the olive branch by ending the 50-year embargo and beginning a new, peaceful relationship with this neighboring country. Cuba poses no substantial threat to the U.S., militarily or economically, and the American people would prefer to have a free trade relationship rather than a lasting Cold War grudge. Sign the petition to urge President Obama to end the embargo against Cuba.

Dear President Obama,

The Cuban president Raul Castro was recently quoted in the press as saying that conversations between his nation and the U.S. have been very diplomatic and beneficial and that the relationship between the two nations may be improving. Officially, the White House has denied any change in this relationship, however this would be a perfect opportunity to patch up an outdated and unnecessary grudge.

The Cuban embargo could be considered the last holdover from the Cold War, which ended in every other way over 20 years ago. We have no issue trading with other Communist states like China, so why should Cuba be treated differently? Both the American and Cuban people would be happy to open a free trade relationship, and now is a perfect time to do so. Please end this pointless embargo.
