Target: President of the Philippines, Benigno Simeon Aquino III
Goal: Save the turtles from irresponsible Filipino tourism developments
Due to the launch of a successful tourism campaign in 2012, the Philippines finally received a large portion of the tourism market. Bringing in tourists to the Philippines is great news for their economy, but it has caused concern for the disappearing turtle population. It has already been reported that all seven types of marine turtles are under threat, and five of these turtles are from the Philippines’ waters. Tourists who visit the coastal seas of the Philippines pose a huge threat to the turtles because human presence causes a disturbance to the lives of the turtles. Tourists also threaten the turtles by polluting the sea with waste and other debris.
Because the officials have to keep up with tourist attractions, they display negligence when it comes to the safety of the turtles. For example, tourist managers tie turtles to trees or put them in tanks to show the guests. It is a way to bring in tourists, but causes a lot of harm to the turtles.
There is a different form of tourism that can be done instead of these harmful, devastating methods. It is called Eco-tourism, which is a form of touring where travelers can educate themselves about the natural habitats and seas. The travelers pay to visit undisturbed areas, and this can end up being very beneficial to saving marine life. Sadly, when there isn’t an eco-tourism strategy put in place it can often be devastating to the environment, which is what we see now in the Philippines.
Sign this petition to tell the Filipino government that we need to protect these animals and ban reckless touring.
Dear President of the Philippines, Benigno Simeon Aquino III,
We are thrilled that a booming tourism market has brought the Philippines back on its feet in regards to its economy. Our only concern now is that this wave of tourists is becoming a threat to the turtle population that lives in the Filipino waters. The turtles are already under threat and there are five turtle species that call the Philippines home. Tourists cause developmental and pollution issues that are affecting the livelihood of the marine turtles. If you were to implement a stronger eco-tourism system, then it would greatly help the animals living in the Philippines and at the same time give the struggling economy an even bigger boost. These tours will give people a reason to help protect the animals rather than create more problems for the animals. Please take this proposal under consideration and put a ban on irresponsible tourism and introduce strong animal protection measures.
