Target: Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC)
Goal: Commend the NIHRC for lifting the ban on same-sex couples adopting in Northern Ireland
On December 11th, 2013, the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission officially lifted the ban on same-sex couples adopting children. While it was met with some opposition from other government officials, the commission has stood its ground and the law has been changed. Sign the petition below, thanking the NIHRC for progressing towards equality for all couples who seek to adopt children into their homes.
The law previously stated that no unmarried couple could adopt a child. Because gay marriage is illegal in Northern Ireland, it essentially served as a ban on same-sex couples adopting anyone. As such, the law now states that any couple—married or not—can seek to adopt a child through the system. While same-sex couples are still not legally able to marry, it is definitely a step in the right direction for Northern Ireland.
Discussions concerning this law began in June 2013 when the NIHRC questioned if the ban was a breach of the European human rights laws. Finding that it was, the commission made moves to reverse the law immediately. However they were met with opposition from Health Minister Edward Poots, a known anti-gay supporter, who anxiously tried to repeal this decision. Due to his actions, the ban remained in effect while his arguments were filed. As it turned out, his disagreement with the new law was basically solely his belief that a child does best when raised with a father and a mother. Since he was not able to present any evidence that was not just a personal opinion, the system disregarded his complaints and the ban was officially lifted early December.
Commend the NIHRC for stepping up for equality for each couple, regardless of gender. By lifting the ban on adoption for same-sex couples, countless couples are now finally able to bring children out of orphanages and foster care, and instead create families for these children. Sign this petition to thank the NIHRC for their actions.
I read about the lifting of the ban on same-sex couples adopting children in Northern Ireland. I am writing to show my appreciation for your actions, and to commend you for helping to usher your people towards further equality for all.
By removing this anti-gay law, you have opened the doors for children in orphanages and foster care to finally have a home with loving parents, regardless of gender or sexual identity. Thank you for reversing the ban, and for returning the right of same-sex couples to create their own families.
