Target: Michigan Legislature
Goal: Reverse Michigan law requiring unfair, extra insurance for abortion
Recently, the Republican-lead Michigan Legislature passed a law requiring women to purchase extra insurance in the case of needing an abortion. The insurance cannot be bought once a woman is pregnant, and does not take into account cases of rape or sexual assault. The only exception is if the woman’s condition is life-threatening; otherwise the abortion must be paid for entirely out of pocket. This bill has been turned down once before by Governor Rick Snyder and was only brought back because of citizen petitions. Sign this petition to reverse this unfair law, and instead have it placed on the state bill where all the voters of Michigan can decide for themselves.
This bill passed through Governor Snyder’s office once before and he vetoed it saying it would interfere with the private marketplace. He also stated his disapproval that this bill did not include exceptions for cases of rape or incest. However, the Michigan Right to Life organization disagreed with this course of action and created a petition to put the bill into government hands once more. The group gathered roughly 300,000 signatures in support of putting the bill through again. However, sources have stated the petition did not portray the issue in full truth. Instead, the petition appeared to be in support of putting this bill on the state-wide vote platform, and was also linked as being part of the Affordable Care Act. Neither of these facts is true.
The bill is not slated for the state vote but instead passed to the legislature through a legal loophole. Having already been voted on, the law will go into effect March 2014 as it did not receive the two-thirds vote necessary to be put into action immediately. And while it is noteworthy that 300,000 people signed this petition, it must be remembered they were lead by false pretenses, and that this only represents about 4% of the number of voters in Michigan.
While insurance has not played a large role in past abortions in Michigan, it definitely does deserve to be the choice of state-wide voters whether it should be kept separate. This bill, put into place by the signatures on a petition, can also be reserved by a petition. Citizens deserve to have a voice in these important decisions, especially ones that affect the health and mental well-being of our women—mothers, daughters, wives, leaders, and most importantly, human beings. Sign the petition below to put this decision back into the hands of the people of Michigan.
Dear Michigan Legislature,
I recently learned about the new law requiring a separate insurance rider for abortions. This is a very important decision affecting the lives of thousands of Michigan citizens, and should thus be put to a state-wide vote. The people need to have a voice in the law.
The bill, which was put forward by citizen petition, was signed by people who believed this would be put on the state-wide vote ballot, and who were also mislead to think it related to the Affordable Care Act. Neither of these cases are true. Additionally, the petition was only signed by 4% of Michigan voters.
Please consider my signature to this letter as my support for this law to be reversed, and for the bill to be put to a vote by the people of Michigan.
