Provide Healthcare for Imprisoned Activist

Target: Iranian Justice Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi

Goal: Obtain proper medical care or release for an Iranian detained political activist

A political activist in Iran named Hootan Dolati has been denied medical treatment for a heart condition repeatedly while imprisoned in Tehran’s Evin Prison. He went on a hunger strike in late November to protest the denial to medical care for angina, his chronic heart condition. This disease requires that Mr. Dolati take medicine. However, he has been denied the medicines ever since his arrest in March of 2013.

The government in Tehran must allow for prisoners to receive the medical treatment that they need. In particular if they are a prisoner of conscience like Mr. Dolati. Mr. Dolati was arrested and held for nearly a month in solitary confinement where he was reportedly tortured or otherwise ill treated. In addition to his heart condition, Mr. Dolati also suffers from knee and back injuries that have been made worse through torture.

When he was finally sentenced to three years in prison, he was convicted of vague charges such as, “distribution of propaganda”, and “membership of” the banned political group, the National Front Party. He was not allowed to participate in the trial and only heard of his sentence later. A few months later, his sentence was decreased to 18 months imprisonment but he would not be allowed to take part in any political party or social network for five years. He has been imprisoned solely for his beliefs and political tendencies. The government must immediately allow for Mr. Dolati to receive a re-trial.

It is believed that Mr. Dolati now has great difficulty walking.  Despite all of these facts, the staff at the clinic in Evin Prison has denied him any treatment. In face of this, he started a “wet” hunger strike, in that he only drinks water or tea. Due to this strike and his numerous other health conditions, many on the outside of the prison are beginning to worry for his life. Sign this petition and demand that Mr. Dolati receive the medical attention he needs before it is too late.

Dear Minister Mostafa Pourmohammadi,

I urge you to immediately and unconditionally release Hootan Dolati as he is a prisoner of conscious, held solely so as to prevent him from exercising his human rights of freedom of expression and association. I also ask that you provide him with the medical care that he needs. Denying him this right is denying him the right to life, the most basic of all human rights. Doing so puts your government at odds with the international community.

By releasing Mr. Dolati, your government can show the world that you are serious about improving your human rights record. Allow your people to join whatever political party they desire, doing so will only improve your society and therefore your economy. I urge you to set your government on the right path.
