Target: Patricia A. Brown, Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH)’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare
Goal: Halt funding of sexual behavior studies that involve the genital mutilation of live mice and rats.
The National Institutes of Health is currently receiving taxpayer dollars to fund dozens of cruel sexual behavior studies, some of which involve the genital mutilation of hamsters, mice and rats.
At Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, live mice and rats have the skin of their penises cut off. Their genitals are then shocked with electrodes for up to five minutes before they are killed and their penises dissected.
“Researchers” at the University of Michigan measured the amount of time it took for a male rat to mount the female, insert his penis and ejaculate. At the end of this voyeuristic practice, the rats’ skulls were cut open, tubes were implanted into their brains and chemicals designed to block the animals’ ability to process sexual pleasure were injected—all at a more than $4.5 million cost to taxpayers.
By signing the petition below, you are urging the government to halt the funding of these sadistic experiments and encouraging NIH to employ more humane research practices in its future studies. Please help put an end to the senseless abuse of these gentle and intelligent creatures.
Dear Director of the National Institutes of Health’s Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare Patricia A. Brown,
The cruel, sadistic sexual behavior studies that are being performed at various respected academic institutions across the country must be stopped.
In the laboratories of several well-known universities, hamsters, mice and rats are suffering brain damage and genital mutilation. These animals undergo severe mental and physical trauma, including the injection of arousal hormones and the prevention of mating as well as the removal of the animals’ ovaries and penis skin, before they are unceremoniously killed and their reproductive organs dissected.
I urge you to put a stop to these twisted experiments and hope that other animals will be spared this torture. Please consider the lives of those that cannot speak for themselves and bring an end to these inhumane studies.
