Commend Scientist for Standing Up for Truth

Thank Scientist for Commitment to the Truth

Target: Charles Monnett

Goal: Thank Charles Monnett for speaking out about the truth of global warming and how it affects animals

Dr. Charles Monnett first spotted the dead polar bears when he was studying whales. After a closer look, he speculated that the four dead polar bears he saw had drowned after swimming longer than usual distances. The reason for their elongated swim was melting ice.

A scientist first and foremost, Dr. Monnett refused to keep his findings to himself. He believes in scientific integrity above all else. Unfortunately, not everyone is so nobly motivated. Charles Monnett has been accused of falsifying data and otherwise manipulating data for his own purposes, but this is as far from the truth as possible. Rather, Dr. Monnett has been targeted because he has bravely stuck to the truth.

Recently, Dr. Monnett received $100,000 as part of a government deal to retire from his current job and not to take any more jobs in the Interior Department for five years. The only crime he has committed is refusing to cover up any of his findings for the sake of any government or corporation’s agenda.

Charles Monnett should be thanked for his integrity and willingness to share his findings with the public, despite being driven out of his industry because of it. But this is not just about him. Dr. Monnett might be strong enough to resist pressure from the government and corporations, but other scientists, especially those who are earlier in their careers or have families to provide for, might not have the same ability to stand up for the truth if they could potentially lose their jobs. Thank Dr. Charles Monnett for his scientific integrity, and send a message to all scientists that we support them.

Dear Dr. Monnett,

It can be difficult to stand up for what you know is right, but you did exactly that when you refused to let the government corrupt the truth. When you discovered the four dead polar bears who died from drowning after swimming long distances due to global warming, you refused to hide the truth. Thank you for standing up for scientific integrity and transparency.

We think these values are more important than the agenda of any government agency or corporation. Not only do we think that your actions were very courageous considering the backlash you received, but we are glad that you were willing to speak out in the face of these pressures to remain silent. You are a role model for young scientists everywhere who will undoubtedly face similar dilemmas during their careers. We hope that these scientists will be inspired by your example and maintain their commitment to scientific integrity, even when it is not the easiest path to take.

Thank you for your outstanding commitment to the scientific field. The world needs to hear the truth even if it is difficult to hear. For your bravery and willingness to speak out, we thank you sincerely. Without scientists like you, the world would undeniably be worse off.
