Stop Drone Strikes from Killing Civilians

Target: U.S. President Barack Obama

Goal: End deadly U.S. drone strikes that are killing innocent civilians in Pakistan

Deadly drone attacks are killing thousands of innocent Pakistani civilians, adults and children alike. Despite Obama’s policy on drones only targeting ‘terrorists,’ the execution of this plan has gone irrevocably awry. Over one year ago, Pakistani grandmother Mamana Bibi was killed in a US drone strike while outside picking vegetables. Mamana Bibi had no affiliation with any terrorist networks and has not been the first or last innocent Pakistani civilian to be killed in such a manner.

This is not a new issue. Since 2004, there have been a reported 370 drone strikes in Pakistan, resulting in over 3,000 innocent deaths.  A majority of these attacks have taken place in Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA), a region populated with militant group shelters and civilians. A drone recently attacked a madrassa (religious school) in the FATA region, but fortunately no one was killed.

On May 23rd of this year, President Obama gave a speech informing the U.S. public about these attacks, explaining that targeted drones strikes are legal. He also added, “The same human progress that gives us the technology to strike half a world away also demands the discipline to constrain that power – or risk abusing it.” There is nothing ethical or disciplined in the act of killing innocent bystanders.

By signing this petition you will help urge President Obama to ban drone strikes in Pakistan.

Dear President Barack Obama,

The senseless killing of innocent Pakistani civilians is irresponsible and unethical.  During the past nine years over 3,000 lives have been lost belonging to people who do not fit the profile of terrorists.  These atrocities must cease, and this must be done immediately.

On May 23rd you addressed our nation by saying,  “The same human progress that gives us the technology to strike half a world away also demands the discipline to constrain that power – or risk abusing it.”  By allowing these ‘targeted’ drone strikes in Pakistan you are allowing the abuse of power that you spoke against.

If these practices had stopped sooner, people like Mamana Bibi, a Pakistani grandmother who was targeted and killed in a drone strike last year for no plausible reason, would have been able to live their lives more free from fear. These actions are a blatant attack and disregard of human rights and welfare.

I am imploring you to ban this noxious practice. It is unethical, ineffective, and extremely irresponsible on the behalf of the U.S. to kill innocent people.
