Target: Mel Reiff Hill, Creator of “the GENDER book”
Goal: Commend efforts to spread positive light on LGBT community
Gender and sexuality are often seen as interchangeable terms by those who are uninformed about the complex dichotomy between them. Not only do they mean different things, but each comes with its own phenomena that deserve to be defined and highlighted to fit the vast spectrum of individuals who don’t quite fit the norm. In the GENDER book created by illustrator Mel Reiff Hill and editors Jay Mays and Robin Mack, gender and sexuality are explored as multifaceted issues, accompanied by entertaining illustrations.
For nearly three years the team has researched, written, edited and drawn the work, which contains nearly 90 pages of fully illustrated and informational guides to explaining how gender and sexuality work. Along with the clever guides are explanations of terminologies important in the LGBT community, which include drag queen, drag king, intersex, genderqueer and transgender.
In a non-judgemental and family-friendly presentation, the GENDER book dispels negative connotations about sexuality and gender expression and offers respectable and positive narratives whose resources are rich and unbiased. Creator Mel Reiff Hill stated recently that “We thought there should be a resource you can read in one sitting. It should be illustrated and as fun as a kid’s book while going into some real depth and true stories…the book should help people come out and educate their friends and family.”
With funding from Kickstarter, the creators of the GENDER book hope it will be available on the shelves of LGBT community organizations, schools and libraries nationwide. By signing this petition, you’ll commend the efforts of these powerful activists to spread a positive light on the LGBT community, and support the GENDER book‘s distribution and availability.
Dear Mel Reiff Hill,
Your team’s recent creation of the GENDER book is not only groundbreaking but commendable, as LGBTs have fought endlessly to dispel the negative connotations surrounding gender expression and sexuality.
Not only does your book demystify readers, it also presents itself as an easy-to-read guide with brilliant illustrations. It is sure to engage any reader, young or old, and promote positive images of the LGBT community.
As our recent history shows, people are hostile towards things they do not understand. The issues of being gay, lesbian, transgendered or intersexed are met with ignorance, which manifests itself through homophobia. By taking this stand to inform people in an unbiased, friendly and passionate way, you’ve solidified yourself as a powerful LGBT activist and helped thousands, if not millions, of families that deal with LGBT issues feel better equipped to defend gender, sexuality and their loved ones.
Thank you for the creation of the GENDER book. I truly hope to see it become a staple in homes across the country, as a valorous effort to debunk negative myths about homosexuality, gender expression and sexuality.
