Target: PETA India and Animal Rahat
Goal: Thank India for ending cruel circus performances that abuse elephants for entertainment.
India has agreed to stop using elephants in their circus performances. The Animal Welfare Board of India said that they will seize all aged and wounded animals from India’s circuses, and will serve legal notices to any circuses that are illegally forcing any injured or sick elephants to perform for their shows. This is in response to a nine month investigation of circuses across India done by India’s PETA and Animal Rahat. These organizations investigated about a dozen circuses and found that animal handlers were beating elephants with sticks and other objects.
PETA India has documented many violations of animal welfare laws from the circuses. There were cases of circuses snatching elephants from their natural habitats to perform in their shows. The elephants had been forced into chains and beaten when they were not doing what they were told.
Although India has agreed to stop the abuse, many other countries, including the United States have not. They are still using the same abusive practices to get the elephants to perform the way they want them to. For now, we thank India for their first step toward animal welfare. We can only hope that they stick to their word and truly end the abuse by cracking down on any circuses that don’t abide by the new law.
Sign this petition to thank PETA India and Animal Rahat for all of their hard work to end elephant abuse.
Dear PETA India and Animal Rahat,
After your nine month long study and investigation of circuses across the country revealed prevalent brutality among animal handlers, the Animal Welfare Board of India has elected to close the registration of elephants in their circus shows. That is extremely good news, and we hope this will begin a ripple effect that influences other nations which are still using elephants in their circuses. We hope that in the near future there will be no more elephants enslaved by circuses, and that more countries will completely ban all elephants and any other animals that are being used for entertainment. With your help, more elephants can get away from the suffering and abuse that they know too well.
We will continue to support your endeavors in saving animals around the world because we need more compassionate people who will stop the abuse of animals. This news is an amazing achievement by both your organizations.
