Protect Wolverines from Extinction

Target: United States Fish and Wildlife Service

Goal: Protect wolverines from climate change and other human interference, by declaring them an endangered species.

Wolverines are strong animals, but they are no match for the constant dangers that threaten their existence. Their population is on the decline due to climate change, trapping and other human pursuits. With less than 250 wolverines living in the Rocky Mountain States, it is imperative that the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) declares wolverines an endangered species.

On Oct. 30, 2013, the USFWS reopened a public discussion on whether or not wolverines should be labeled a “threatened” species. This classification is not nearly strong enough to protect the limited number of wolverines that are left in this country. Climate change has drastically reduced their snowy habitat, making it difficult for wolverines to hunt, build dens and reproduce. The USFWS is accepting public input until Dec. 2, 2013, so we must speak up for the wolverines before it is too late.

If wolverines are merely labeled a “threatened” species, they will still be subjected to the dangers of recreational trapping. An “endangered” classification would fully protect wolverines from callus human interference.

By signing the petition below, you will help encourage the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to declare wolverines an endangered species.

Dear United States Fish and Wildlife Service,

Wolverines, who call the Rocky Mountain States their home, are under constant threat from climate change, trapping and other human interference. Warmer temperatures have made it difficult for wolverines to hunt, build dens and reproduce, while recreational trapping is a completely unnecessary hazard that can be prevented by declaring wolverines an endangered species.

According to In Defense of Animals, there are only 250 wolverines left in the Rocky Mountain region, and that number will continue to dwindle if we don’t make the decision to protect them. I am urging you to classify wolverines as an endangered species, so that we can safeguard their future.
