Target: John Donahoe, CEO of eBay, Inc.
Goal: Stop selling banned delicacy foie gras in the UK
eBay is the last remaining major supplier of foie gras, a cruel French delicacy, to the United Kingdom – despite a ban in Britain and a refusal to supply the food by most British retail giants. eBay’s attitude toward animal rights is behind the times, and it must immediately stop importing the food to areas where it has been banned.
Foie gras is the enlarged, diseased liver of fattened ducks or geese. The birds are force-fed by a tube that pumps up to four pounds of grain slurry a day straight into the esophagus, causing the liver to swell to ten times its regular size. This cruel and painful procedure causes kidney necrosis, organ failure, spleen and esophagus damage, and fatty liver disease- especially in large-scale operations where time is valued over animal welfare.
Often, to facilitate this feeding, the birds are kept in small battery cages for the duration of the two-week force-feeding cycle. Due to their enlarged size, many of the birds have trouble standing upright. The stressed animals can tear out their own feathers, injure themselves, or even cannibalize other ducks in their stressed states. The often filthy state of living conditions causes various infections as well as infestation of vermin, which can actually eat immobile ducks alive.
Though this cruel delicacy is outlawed in Britain, the import is not controlled- allowing eBay sellers to circumvent the ban easily, and making the auction giant the largest remaining supplier of foie gras to the UK. Demand that eBay UK follow the footsteps of more conscious retailers and ban the sale of foie gras on their website.
Dear John Donahoe, CEO of eBay, Inc.,
Foie gras, from the French “fatty liver,” is made by force-feeding ducks or geese through a tube shoved down their throat into their esophagus. This cruel and painful practice forces up to four pounds of feed slurry per day into a bird, causing organ damage or failure as well as kidney necrosis and fatty liver disease.
The birds are kept in cramped battery cages where they are unable to move, and end up injuring themselves or others due to stress. These filthy enclosures are a breeding ground for infection and the infestation of flies and vermin.
eBay is the last remaining supply giant to carry foie gras in the United Kingdom. Despite a ban in Britain, the auction giant continues to facilitate the import of the cruel delicacy. I ask that eBay UK’s policy be amended to disallow the sale of foie gras to areas in which it is banned.
