Stop Rewarding Alcoholics with Beer

Target: The Rainbow Foundation Project leader Gerrie Holterman

Goal: End a project that enables alcoholics’ addiction, and advocate for effective rehabilitation programs instead.

Several alcoholics in Amsterdam are cleaning the streets for the payment of five cans of beer a day. A group called the Rainbow Foundation Project is sponsoring this initiative, which gives alcoholics both beer and tobacco for coming to work each day. This project is funded by government grants and public donations.

Allegedly, the alcoholics were causing trouble around town by being loud, obnoxious, fighting, and making inappropriate comments. Gerrie Holterman, project leader, said, ‘The aim is to keep them occupied, to get them doing something so they no longer cause trouble at the park.’

Although this sounds like a practical “everybody wins” type of solution, it seems morally wrong for the government to be funding this sort of initiative. If the alcoholics are truly addicts and have a problem, the government and organizations should promote initiatives to help them overcome their alcoholism rather than feeding their addictions.

The Rainbow Foundation Project should continue their community service in Amsterdam, but should find other means of doing so. There are plenty of options that the foundation could pursue that would be more beneficial to the greater good.

Please sign the petition below to encourage the Rainbow Foundation Project to gear their efforts towards a program that would be beneficial to the alcoholics in the long run.

Dear Gerrie Holterman,

The project you are running involving paying alcoholics beer for work is clever, but it is morally incorrect. There is no justifiable reason that a government funded program should be providing alcoholics with alcohol. By doing this, you are just enabling their bad habits and making this issue bigger in the long run.

You should instead be gearing your efforts to  helping their issues with alcoholism instead of keeping the addiction alive. It would involve an equal amount of effort to create a project to help alcoholics break their addiction and begin a new, more positive life.  That way, you will no longer have to worry about them causing issues in the streets, and they will no longer be suffering from their personal issues with alcohol.

Please take these ideas into consideration, as a way to improve the quality of your country and the happiness of those living in it.
