Keep Dolphin Performance Out Of 2014 Olympics

Target: Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee

Goal: Tell the President of the International Olympics that a dolphin does not need to be a part of the Olympic relay race

It has been reported that a dolphin is scheduled to play a major part in the Sochi Olympics for 2014. The dolphin show will take place during the Russian Sochi Olympics torch relay race before the introductory ceremony. A dolphin trainer will be holding onto the dolphin’s fin with one hand and holding the Olympics torch with the other while they swim together across the swimming pool at the Black Sea Resort.

Many are concerned for the safety of this dolphin. This fear is justified, as during a nationwide relay, the torch exploded and was engulfed in flames. During the incident, the torch started erupting flames over a meter long before being seized by the Sochi officials. The RIA Novosti website claimed that a young 13-year-old girl suffered from burns because of the incident, but the head of the Sochi organizing committee denied the story.

Using any kind of fire or torch could cause some sort of explosion and put a helpless dolphin in peril. This dangerous move can leave the animal trainer and the dolphin with painful burns, or even kill them. Please sign this petition to tell the President of the International Olympic Committee to take the dolphin out of the show.

PETITION LETTER:

Dear Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee

News reports say that the 2014 Sochi Olympics will have a dolphin in the torch race before the opening ceremony. I think the Olympics is a spectacular sporting event that the whole world loves to tune in and watch, but please take the time to consider removing the dolphin from the show. Last month, there were reports of an incident with the Olympic torch. The torch was engulfed in flames and caused burns to the people involved. If you have a dolphin alongside the person carrying the torch, there is no doubt that the dolphin will get hurt and experience the burns.

I believe that the show can still be a magnificent spectacle without the use of the dolphin. Please show the world that you care about animals and the dolphin’s safety. As the president of the International Olympics, you have the power to take the defenseless dolphin out of the show and protect that dolphin’s life.

Sincerely,

  1. I’ll be boycotting the Sochi Olympics. Dolphins forced to perform, LGBT rights violated at every turn. These games will be a disgrace.

  2. Please remember a dolphin in the olympics will put dolphins in the public eye which will reinforce new nelegislation to protect them. I say let them use the dolphin and we will use this against them. An icon to protect them

    • I understand your point, however, respectfully I disagree. I think we have enough evidence to support anti-captivity and don’t feel the need to use another dolphin to further reinforce the fact that captivity kills. I can’t in good conscience support “using” any cetacean to further bring visibility to this issue.

    • your logic is terribly flawed. what you are basically saying is that it is ok to rape one child to make the plight of other raped children more visible. please gain some more insight before making such a blunt statement.

    • Chie Hazard, have to agree w/Maritza that your logic is flawed. You don’t think it’s conflicting for a country that murders dolphins brutally in their Coves at Taiji, Japan, 7 mos. a year, every year to “use” them as a symbol of worldwide peace at the Olympics?? They can’t have it both ways–they pilfer the oceans; put dolphins in captivity jeopardizing their lives + shortening lifespans by 1/2. What they don’t steal for their own selfish use, they brutally slaughter & sell to their citizens with horribly high levels of mercury, PCBS and radiation. This action, as an “Icon” holds no water, Chie Hazard. There is no logic in your suggestion & think you need to reflect how tragic your simple assessment is. One dolphin carrying a torch & trainer, the very same people who abuse these magnificent mammals, will not be a message to protect them. Suggest you use your opinions in a more positive way to protect them + spread awareness.

  3. Just use a light bulb torch for this particular event nobody will know or care. simple

    • Steve, Not the point. The kind of light used is not the topic here. This sends a bad message to the world that it’s okay to use animals, dolphins in particular, that they slaughter for 7 months every year in their Coves at Taiji. That doesn’t seem conflicting to you? And you are not correct: “Nobody will know or care.” A lot of the world cares; maybe you are speaking for yourself. A lot of people spend a lot of effort preserving our marine ecosystem. If you are not one of them, then stand aside.

  4. Keeping dolphins and whales in captivity should be made illegal world wide. It is simply cruel to keep them in tanks. Research has proved this time and time again yet we refuse to act… Sea World and other organisations like them should be ashamed of themselves!

  5. Tursiops truncatus says:

Good petition.. BUT it should also focus on the fact that using a dolphin in the ceremony is saying that it is OK in general to keep dolphins in captivity. After The Cove etc this is a backward step.. the emphasis of the petition should be that the Olympics should not be used to try to show the world that performing dolphins is moral. Clearly.. it is not.

  6. Leigh brownsmith says:

    This must stop!!! It’s barbaric!!!

I am not a fan of the Olympics to begin with. Leave the dolphins alone, they should never be captives. Animals are not here for humans to use and abuse.
