Target: President of Pakistan Mamnoon Hussain
Goal: End the use of schools in Pakistan for military purposes.
Armed forces, whether national, state, or local, should end their use of schools in Pakistan for military purposes. Whenever there is an armed conflict, military forces have taken schools and turned them into bunkers, detention facilities, military training camps, weapons depots, and bases for military operation. When this occupation happens, children are forced to come to school surrounded by armed soldiers, and must try to learn under the threat of attack. This can only negatively affect the way a child learns, and ultimately they stop coming to school entirely. Some of the female teachers and students are given lewd looks by the soldiers, and they are at greater risk of losing access to education.
Naturally, causalities have erupted when armed forces take over schools. Children and teachers alike have been caught in the crossfire, which leaves the schools damaged or destroyed. Other repercussions from such attacks are long term closures of schools, decline in student attendance, and psychological harm on the entire community. An organization called the Global Coalition to Protect Education from Attack is developing guidelines to protect schools and universities from military use.
This problem not only affects Pakistan, but many other countries around the world as well. If you support a safe, secure learning environment for children, please lend your support and sign this petition.
Dear President Mamnoon Hussain,
I implore you to ensure that military forces do not use schools for military purposes. I am aware that schools are being converted into bunkers, weapons depots, and bases when they should be used to educate your young. The consequences of their presence puts the children and teachers in danger of losing their lives and suffering long term harm. How can children be expected to learn when there is the looming threat of a bomb being dropped or soldiers storming into their classrooms?
I hope you will seriously consider my plea and do everything in your power to ensure that children – whether male or female – can get access to a safe and secure classroom environment. All children should have the right to a good education, and armed soldiers do not promote this ideal.
