Target: US Food and Drug Administration
Goal: Create restrictions on the rate that antibiotics are prescribed, to prevent germs from developing resistance.
Recent studies have revealed that human beings are on a path towards potentially becoming resistant to antibiotics. There are noticeable trends in the over-prescribing of antibiotics, specifically in children. Each antibiotic use greatly increases the risk of antibiotic resistance, so action needs to be taken to prevent over-prescription of these drugs.
Antibiotics are used to shorten or cure illnesses associated with bacterial infections. They are useless against viral infections, however they are still commonly prescribed for viral infections for which they provide no relief. This is risky, especially in children who could easily become resistant to antibiotics if they are overexposed early in life.
For some illnesses, antibiotics are the only cure, so a resistance to these drugs could potentially be life threatening. It is for this reason that the manner in which antibiotics are prescribed needs to be more strictly regulated.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must take action to regulate antibiotics. There needs to be some sort of rule set for doctors to abide by, in which they only prescribe antibiotics to bacterial infections and only when the antibiotic is necessary. It is imperative that such rules go into effect immediately to avoid a potentially disastrous antibiotic resistance epidemic.
Please sign the petition below to urge the FDA to propose regulations regarding the manner and frequency with which antibiotics are prescribed.
Dear Food and Drug Administration,
Recent studies show a pattern of the over-prescribing of antibiotics, which could cause a resistance to these drugs. This situation needs to be avoided because there are many illnesses that only antibiotics can resolve, and a resistance to these drugs could be very dangerous.
The problem is that antibiotics are only effective for treatment of bacterial infections, but they are often prescribed for viral infections in which they are useless. This is baffling because it is a very basic and well-known fact that antibiotics are only used for treatment of bacterial infections, yet doctors are still prescribing these drugs to many people with viral infections.
It is now your job to take action before it is too late. Some kind of regulations on when and why antibiotics are prescribed need to be created. Doctors should not be able to freely prescribe antibiotics without a set of guidelines.
Please take action on this issue to ensure that antibiotics are not misused, and help avoid a potentially dangerous antibiotic resistance issue.
