Condemn Poland’s Reliance on Dirty Coal

Target: Polish Government

Goal: Condemn the hypocritical reliance on dirty coal by the Polish government

The Polish government has recently declared its long-term commitment to coal. In accordance with this declaration, Poland is currently hosting a coal summit that is billed as the most important event of the year for the coal industry. Hypocritically, Poland is also currently hosting the U.N. climate summit. Please condemn the provocative and unabashed hypocrisy of the Polish government and help curb reliance on coal.

Coal is the dirtiest energy source in the world in terms of CO2 emissions, and is the primary cause of smog, acid rain, and air pollution. Despite the fact that scientists and societies have known of the toxic nature of coal since major issues arose in 19th century England, Poland continues to brazenly and recklessly rely on coal. Nearly 90% of Poland’s electricity is fueled by coal and the recent government declaration makes it clear this will not change any time soon.

As Polish citizens take to the streets to protest against poor air quality caused by dirty coal, politicians remain reluctant to act and energy companies enjoy the hospitality of an accommodating Polish government. According to statistics, Krakow, the host city of the coal summit and one of the most polluted cities in Europe, is so polluted that every citizen breathes the equivalent of 2,500 cigarettes every year. Unfortunately, it is clear that Poland, also the current host of the U.N summit on climate change, is committed to coal at the expense of meaningful progress regarding climate change.

By signing the petition below you are supporting a healthier planet by condemning the Polish government’s hypocritical reliance on dirty coal.

Dear Polish Government,

As simultaneous host of both the U.N. summit on climate change and an important coal summit, you are in a unique position to make a meaningful and compelling statement to the world regarding the importance and urgency of climate change. With the world watching, I urge you to reconsider your heavy reliance on dirty coal and make a statement that will demonstrate your commitment to the health of your citizens and the planet.

As you are well aware, the deleterious effects of burning coal have inspired your citizens to protest against reliance on coal. I commend your investments in clean coal technology; however, with little, if any, indication that this strategy will ever be effective, it is well past time to utilize other alternatives. I urge you to consider the long-term consequences of your actions and not let the political and economic trivialities of today make action in the future futile.

The damaging effects of burning coal should also inspire the Polish government to action. Please take decisive action to reduce your reliance on coal and support the health of people in Poland and worldwide.
