Demand Justice for Military Sexual Assault Victims

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand's new bill would support military sexual assault victims

Target: The United States Senate

Goal: Support Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s effort to assist military sexual assault survivors.

Sexual assault is a huge problem in the military. It has even been called an epidemic. In order to eradicate this serious problem, victims need to come forward to share their stories. But victims will only come forward if they feel like they have adequate support and resources. Currently, only the Pentagon has the power to prosecute members of the military charged with sexual crimes. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has introduced a bill that will give military sexual assault and rape victims another option: an independent investigation free from military supervision.

The Pentagon does not want the bill passed because they want to remain in charge of prosecuting cases of sexual assault within their ranks. They are putting pressure on military supporters inside the Senate to keep the bill from succeeding.  This kind of bullying tactic is the exact reason we need to take away their power to prosecute these cases.

We need to put victims’ rights first. Being the victim of sexual assault or rape is a horrific event. Having this kind of crime happen to you within the supposedly secure ranks of the military is a complete betrayal. We cannot betray military sexual assault victims further by letting the Pentagon investigate their own people. For the sake of the victims we need independent investigation into these horrific crimes.

Dear U.S. Senate,

It is unethical for the Pentagon to investigate military sexual assault crimes. As long as these abuses keep happening within the military, the military cannot be expected to have an objective opinion of these cases. Without objectivity, appropriate punishment cannot be guaranteed if the accused is found guilty.

We are asking you to support Senator Kirsten Gillibrand’s bill, which will take the power to prosecute these crimes away from the Pentagon. The bill will establish independent investigatory resources for these crimes, allowing victims of military sexual assault to feel like they can safely speak out about the horrific crimes done to them.

By supporting this bill, you will send a strong message of support to military assault and rape victims, many of whom do not come forward because they do not think that their cases will be taken seriously or tried fairly. Support for this bill would change the lives of all of the victims affected by these crimes. It would also send the message to the Pentagon that the United States of America does not tolerate the silencing or shaming of sexual assault victims, regardless of whether or not they are part of the military. For the sake of sexual assault and rape victims everywhere, we urge you to support this bill.
