Target: Madeline Puckette, Editor of Wine Folly

Goal: Support free access to wine education in order to overcome classism

Wine Folly is a growing website that provides information about wine, free of charge, to the general public. Learning about wine can be intimidating, and Wine Folly distills it into simple and digestible terms. Although the acquisition of wine knowledge may seem trivial to some, the ripple effects that can result from  this type of knowledge are powerful. There is a strong correlation of wine knowledge to the social standing that a person is perceived to possess, and in fact, there is truth behind this. Wine Folly helps to even the playing field by giving anyone the opportunity to learn about wine.

In general, a person who is raised in a wealthier echelon of society, versus a lower one, is much more likely to be exposed to wine early on and build a solid foundation for his or her wine knowledge. By contrast, someone who is from a lower class of society is much less likely to have been exposed to wine, and thereby is likely to lack wine knowledge. The effects of this disparity in knowledge make it more difficult to overcome perceived differences in class. Someone who is comfortable with the wine menu at a dinner interview is likely to come across better than someone who is not. However, despite the classist effects that wine can have, they can be remedied with greater access to wine knowledge though such forums as Wine Folly.

Dear Ms. Puckette, Editor of Wine Folly,

For many people, learning about wine can be a daunting task. However, Wine Folly deconstructs this complex area, allowing readers to learn about wine one piece at a time. As a result, it becomes easier for beginners in the world of wine to build their knowledge without being intimidated. The effect, on a broader scale, is that wine becomes less classist and elitist. Wine Folly allows anyone to gain wine knowledge without having to pay for classes or travel to wine country to participate in tastings.

Please continue to produce educational wine materials that give any person the tools they need to feel comfortable with wine. The straightforward graphics that you have make it easy for anyone to learn about wine. The accessibility of Wine Folly is a beautiful thing to see, and something that the world of wine certainly needs more of.
