Target: Senator Max Baucus, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance
Goal: Raise nationwide minimum wage to at least $10/hour
According to a Talking Points Memo article, 76% of Americans now support raising the minimum wage to $9/hour, and President Obama has expressed his intention to raise it to $10/hour. Minimum wage has fallen so far behind the cost of living in recent years that $10/hour would still be well short of what Americans need, but it would be a major improvement from where we are right now.
Since the mid-1970s, middle and low-income wages have continuously declined, while the national economy has continuously grown stronger. The purpose of a minimum wage is to ensure that even the lowest paid jobs can still support a small family when employed full-time. Supporting a family on minimum wage is entirely impossible today. In fact, supporting a single individual on full-time minimum wage is entirely impossible. No one should have to work two full time jobs just to make enough for rent and groceries. There are many ways the government could ensure livable wages without a minimum wage legislation, including with tax incentives, and raising the minimum wage will help in decreasing the gap between the minimum and the living wage.
A minimum wage increase is long overdue. Millions of families struggle to afford housing and food, even with two income-earners that are each working two full-time jobs. America has the strongest economy in the world, and the fact that the hardest working people still need government food assistance to survive is unacceptable. If we raise the minimum wage, we put more income in the hands of people who need it, who will then spend it on things they need, which helps the economy as a whole. Sign the petition to tell Congress to raise the minimum wage to at least $10/hour.
Dear Senator Baucus,
Minimum wage has fallen so far behind the cost of living that a single individual can no longer support his or herself on a full time schedule. For those with limited access to secondary education, minimum wage employment is essentially a guarantee. However, in order to support a family on minimum wage, each income-earner needs to be working two full time jobs, and they will still probably need food assistance.
If we want to decrease people’s dependency on government welfare programs, as well as strengthen our economy, we need to ensure that all employees are paid a livable wage. People cannot spend money in the marketplace if they don’t have enough to live off of in the first place. 76% of Americans believe the minimum wage should be raised to $9/hour, and President Obama believes it should be $10/hour. Please do the right thing for our citizens and our economy by raising the minimum wage to at least $10/hour.
