Ban Performance Enhancing Drugs for Race Horses

Target: The United States Senate
Goal: Ban the use of performance enhancing drugs for race horses and create stricter penalties for owners who are caught administering these drugs

Since 2009, there have been close to 4,000 cases of horse race trainers caught giving performance enhancing drugs to their horses. These same horses have either died or have been critically injured while racing during this time period. Further investigations by the New York Times has shown the devastating impact of these illegal drugs on race horses. This horrifying practice has made an already dangerous race even more so for the horses involved.

The New York Times has also reported that some of the drugs that have been used by horse racers include doping chemicals, snake venom, Viagra, and other similar drugs. Because of the declining amount of customers coming to horse races, the business has had to find different business tactics to keep the customers interested. This marketing includes drugging horses that are unfit to race to make them able to race. Not only are the horses hurt, but the accidents caused by the drugs ends up hurting their jockeys as well. Drugged horses often jerk and drop their jockeys to the ground, causing fatal injuries for both.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2013 would ban the use of illegal drugs on horses, and would also impose punishments on horse owners and trainers who are caught breaking these rules. As performance enhancing drugs pose great danger to both the horses and to the jockeys, this act is an incredibly important step in saving lives.

By signing this petition, we can help pass the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2013, saving the horses while making this race safer for all involved.

Dear U.S. Senate,

There have been almost 4,000 cases of horse trainers administering illegal drugs to their horses, and this has caused a huge number of accidents and deaths within the horse racing community. Horse trainers are putting things such as Viagra, snake venom, and other bizarre chemicals into these horses to improve their performance. These drugs make the horses work so hard that they break their legs, and in turn drop their jockeys to the floor, causing critical injury. Please take a stand against this horrible practice.

By passing the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act of 2013, you would be able to improve the safety and lower the dangerous risks of horse racing. We are urging you to join us to ban the use of drugs in horse racing and improve the integrity of this business.
