Target: Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization
Goal: Provide Afghan women with life-saving prenatal education and midwife training.
Studies conducted by UNICEF and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention have shown that women living in Afghanistan suffer from one of the worst rates of maternal mortality in this world. They have reported that close to half of all deaths among young girls and women in Afghanistan are due to complications with pregnancies and childbirths. Unlike industrialized countries, women in Afghanistan are usually not provided with any access to maternal care. Due to this lack of prenatal health care, women are not ready to face the troubles and complications that comes with their pregnancies. If women are provided with education about pregnancy and midwife training, it could save the lives of thousands of women every year in Afghanistan.
This is the biggest challenge facing all young girls and women in Afghanistan. For these women, prenatal education and training should be a fundamental right. War and Taliban restrictions are some of the reasons the health of women in Afghanistan has been so poor over the last decade.
A large number of maternal deaths can be prevented if women got the proper education and midwife training. By signing this petition, people from all over the world can help the women of Afghanistan with basic knowledge of pregnancy and childbirth.
Dear Margaret Chan, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO),
Pregnancy and childbirth are among the most important times in a young woman’s life. In America, women are provided with some of the best prenatal care and check ups in the world. I wish the amount of health education were the same for the women in Afghanistan. Because of the lack of prenatal education, Afghan women are suffering from pregnancy complications that could have been avoided. If they were given the opportunity to learn and understand the process of pregnancy, they would be able to live out healthier lives and in turn, have healthier children.
Please help support the women in Afghanistan by providing them with the education and training that they need in order to carry out healthy pregnancies. With your help, we can help Afghan women have sustainable pregnancies. They will be able to help themselves during their pregnancy, and will also be able to help others with their newfound knowledge and experience.
