Halt Use of Incendiary Weapons

Azaz Syria during the Syrian Civil War Missing front of House

Target: President Bashar al-Assad

Goal: Urge Syria to stop using incendiary weapons against its own people.

Since November 2012, Syria has used incendiary weapons in 56 of its attacks, most of which affected civilians in the targeted city. The flames are caused by a chemical reaction of a flammable source, producing burns that are difficult to treat and easily causing fires that destroy buildings. This atrocious use of weaponry needs to be stopped, as the Syrian government has even targeted children with these incendiary weapons.

Eye witness accounts detail the Syrian Air Force carrying out dozens of attacks upon their cities, killing 44 civilians and wounding 71 others. Two of these attacks were on two schools and in neighboring residential areas. Some activists have even placed footage of the attacks on YouTube; one particular video shows the incendiary munitions burning up the playground of the Ghaleb Radi school after the Syrian Air Force assaulted it with incendiary bombs. Doctor Saleyha Ahsan, an emergency doctor, recalls seeing dozens of burn victims arrive at her hospital on August 2013; some of the victims were teenagers who were studying for an exam. “One patient with 90 percent third-degree burns arrived alive at the hospital. The clothes had been burned off him. It was the most horrific injury I have ever seen in a live patient. Only his eyes moved.” The patient was sent to Turkey for specialized treatment where he died of his wounds.

Syria’s use of incendiary weapons in or near a civilian population violate international humanitarian law and the laws of war. These attacks desperately need to stop. Many Syrians who have not been able to flee are living in constant terror. The Syrian government should not be treating their people like this. Sign this petition and urge the nation to halt its use of incendiary weapons.

Dear President Bashar al-Assad,

I am aware of your country’s usage of incendiary weapons upon your people. These attacks need to stop as they violate the international humanitarian law and the laws of war. Your people are living in constant fear because they do not know when their homes are going to be flattened or if their children are going to be sent to the hospital.

Countries are urging you to stop this madness, and I urge you to as well. They are your people and you should treat them with the utmost respect and love. Children especially should not be dragged into this conflict. These weapons are inhumane and dangerous. Would you want to experience the burns and agony that these weapons cause?
