Target: Texas Governor Rick Perry
Goal: Enforce access to military benefits for married same-sex couples
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recently declared that all states must provide the same marriage benefits to same-sex military couples as those provided to straight couples. Texas, as well as five other states, have so far ignored Secretary Hagel’s mandate, and continued to deny marriage benefits to same-sex couples. This kind of discrimination cannot be allowed in our armed services. Although some states may choose to deny equal marriage rights to same-sex couples in civilian life, it is simply illegal to attempt to do so in the military.
No one can be denied access to the military based on sexual orientation, and it should be obvious that all service members are entitled to the same marriage benefits regardless of sexual orientation. Even if the marriage laws change from state to state, federal law now requires every state to recognize same-sex marriages. Furthermore, the military is an extension of the federal government, not state governments, and states have no say in how the military operates.
This country has made a lot of progress in recent years to ensure equal rights for all citizens, whether gay, straight, bi-sexual, or transgender. If Texas wants to keep same-sex marriage illegal, they can do so under their own jurisdiction, but they cannot defy federal laws that require equal recognition of same-sex couples, especially when dealing with federal government bodies like the military. Sign the petition to tell Texas Governor Rick Perry to enforce military benefits for same-sex couples in his state.
Dear Governor Perry,
Military officials in your state have attempted to deny marriage benefits to same-sex couples. Regardless of the laws in your state, the federal government requires you to recognize same-sex marriages. Additionally, the military is a federal body, and therefore is not subject to Texas law. Whether or not the people of Texas or the state government agree, you must ensure that same-sex couples have equal access to military benefits.
U.S. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel recently declared that the military shall provide equal marriage benefits to same-sex couples as to heterosexual ones. If you do not follow this mandate you will be in violation of federal law, and you will be doing a great disservice to your state by promoting bigotry and prejudice. Do the right thing by ensuring that all married couples receive equal access to military benefits, regardless of sexual orientation.
