Support Ban on Trans Fats

Target: U.S. Food and Drug Administration

Goal: Show support and gratitude for the FDA’s steps towards banning dangerous trans fats

For the first time ever, the Food and Drug Administration has confronted the idea that trans fats are dangerous and should not be available for human consumption. It now plans to regulate or completely eliminate trans fats from America’s food supply.

Trans fats exist in many oil- or dairy-based products.  Examples include, but are not limited to, margarine and coffee creamers. Created as an alternative to saturated fats, trans fats are used mainly to improve the texture and shelf-life of the foods they are used in. But as time passes, more and more health risks posed by their use are being discovered. Trans fats raise bad cholesterol and cause heart disease, diabetes and an increased risk of stroke.  Consumption of trans fats has been greatly reduced over the last decade simply due to labeling requirements –  a clear indication of their dangerous nature.

The FDA is working with the food industry and legal experts to formulate some sort of regulation regarding trans fats. They believe that a reduction in these dangerous fats could prevent 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths per year.

Trans fats are one of the most if not the most dangerous substance in the American diet. It is especially frightening that people are widely unaware of how many trans fats they actually consume, and that many companies find loopholes to lie about the amount of trans fat in their products. Any sort of ban or regulation will be a large success for American consumers.

Please sign the petition below to support a trans fat ban, eliminating the harmful substances from our food supply.

Dear Food  Drug Administration,

Thank you for your long awaited efforts to regulate or ban trans fats from American products. This is perhaps your most important effort in a long time for the fact that trans fats are one of the most dangerous substances that humans consume and it is in so many common products.

For years, trans fats have been associated with issues such as high cholesterol, heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and other issues yet it has still been present in the American diet. Although its consumption has significantly decreased in the last several years, it is still very detrimental to human health and should not be consumed in any amount.

Your decision to attempt to rectify the issue of trans fats is a huge success for American consumers and we thank you greatly for these efforts. Please continue the effort to try to hopefully completely eliminate trans fats from the human diet and create a healthier nation.

We must not allow companies to switch from trans fats to palm oil. Palm oil is free of trans fats, but it is not healthy because it is a saturated fat, and rain forests in Indonesia are destroyed in order to plant the palm oil trees. Orangutans, forest elephants, and other animals are on the verge of extinction due to the high worldwide demand for palm oil.
