Commend Effort to Ban Dangerous Trans Fat

Target: US Food and Drug Administration and Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D, Commissioner of Food and Drugs

Goal: Support the Food and Drug Administration’s effort to phase out dangerous artificial trans fat.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has made an initial determination that artificial trans fats are not “recognized as safe” for use in food. Because of the grave health risks to Americans, the FDA is seeking to phase out the use of trans fats in food. The FDA has recently opened a 60-day comment period, during which the FDA will seek additional data and input. Please commend the FDA’s effort to phase out this unhealthy food additive.

Trans fat is harmful, serves no known health benefits, and has no safe level of consumption according to the FDA’s initial determination, which is based on available scientific evidence and expert scientific panels. Typically found in processed foods, fried foods, and commercially baked goods such as frozen pizza, microwave popcorn, margarine, French fries, crackers, cookies, and cakes, trans fat has long been recognized as a cause of coronary heart disease.

The upsurge in use of trans fats in the 1960s was due to its cheap production and quality as a preservative. However, evidence regarding the negative health impacts of trans fat has inspired restrictive legislation and caused manufacturers to limit its use. Nevertheless, much work has yet to be done to remove this harmful and unnecessary additive from our food.  FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D. stated, “further reduction in the amount of trans fat in the American diet could prevent an additional 20,000 heart attacks and 7,000 deaths from heart disease each year.”

By signing the petition below you are supporting the FDA’s ongoing battle to protect America’s health by phasing out artificial trans fat.

Dear US Food and Drug Administration and Margaret A. Hamburg, M.D, Commissioner of Food and Drugs,

I commend and support your ongoing efforts to protect America’s health from the deleterious consequences of artificial trans fat. As you well know, the further reduction in trans fats could potentially save 7,000 American lives a year and improve the quality of life for countless more.

Please consider this petition during the 60-day comment period, as additional evidence and support for the necessity and urgency of your campaign to phase out artificial trans fats. Decisive action to promote safe and healthy food must not be stalled by unreasonable concerns over market disruption.

I commend your efforts and support the phasing out of artificial trans fats.
