Commend Non-Profit for Encouraging Creative Writing

Target: Chris Baty, Director of National Novel Writing Month

Goal: Praise the creation of National Novel Writing Month

National Novel Writing Month is a movement of over 258,000 people that is dedicated to encouraging people to write novels. This effort takes place during the month of November, with each participant’s goal being to produce a work of 50,000 words before December hits. This averages out to 1,600 words per day, or roughly three pages double-spaced. National Novel Writing Month makes this goal attainable for participating individuals by encouraging the aspiring novelists to support each other at social events.  Sign this petition to support National Novel Writing Month and encourage even more people to participate!

National Novel Writing Month’s primary mission is to allow aspiring novelists to experience the benefits of producing a book in one month’s time. The capped time frame for writing a book (or for completing any endeavor for that matter) encourages people to work more effectively, and inspires a more creative product. Additionally, creating a piece of art has a magical effect on a person. It gives that person a sense of accomplishment, self-esteem and healthy pride. This is especially true for younger participants. Given that participants in National Novel Writing Month only need to be a minimum of thirteen years old, teenagers have the opportunity to participate as well. Given how vulnerable it can feel to be a teenager, the fact that National Novel Writing Month targets this population is particularly noteworthy.

Large, organized efforts to promote and support creativity and artistic endeavors are invaluable to individuals who use artistic outlets as their only way to escape from the harsh realities of their personal situations. Dear Chris Baty, Director of National Novel Writing Month,

I am writing to commend you for your work directing National Novel Writing Month and for fostering creativity. Frequently, would-be novelists are deterred from going after their dreams because of reluctance to take on a major endeavor without a network of support. National Novel Writing Month dilutes this fear by organizing social events that allow writers to support one another.

Additionally, the scope of the online community and resources is impressive. Helpful videos offer comfort to writers by providing pep talks and advice on how to overcome common writing challenges, such as writer’s block. Another helpful aspect of National Novel Writing Month is that it also has a master list of participating novelists who have been published, which can act as an extra form of encouragement for the writers. However, publishing is not the end goal. National Novel Writing Month makes it clear that the goal, first and foremost, is to achieve an expression of creativity. Thank you for providing this resource to creative individuals!
