Target: Public School 244 Principal Deon Edwards, New York
Goal: Praise school for creating a healthier, more natural lunch menu for students.
Recently, New York’s Public School (P.S.) 244 created an all vegetarian lunch menu for their students. It is part of a plan to help students eat more healthy meals and avoid low-grade, ammonia-treated “meat,” which has made its way into many schools across America. The results of this new lunch schedule have been phenomenal. Applaud P.S. 244 for taking healthy action on behalf of their students.
P.S. 244 is the first public school in the nation to offer a 100% vegetarian lunch menu for their students. As a replacement for hamburgers and hot dogs previously served, there is now organic roasted tofu, braised black beans, and falafel. Recent statistics have shown that since the school switched to their vegetarian menu, the number of students classified as overweight dropped 2%. Amazingly, the number of obese children is still falling.
The 400 enrolled elementary students still have the option to bring their own lunch which can include meat of any kind. However, 90% of students prefer to eat the vegetarian cafeteria food and attend weekly nutrition classes where they learn about having a healthy relationship with food. Since these new implementations of a better lunch menu and nutrition class, there has been improved attendance, higher test scores, and better attention spans.
P.S. 244 has cared for their students by choosing to provide them with the best–instead of cheapest–option for lunches. By implementing a vegetarian menu, they have helped their students become healthier physically and mentally. Obesity has gone down and test scores have gone up, proving that a healthier lunch schedule was the way to go. Applaud P.S. 244 in New York for their great work in caring for their students by providing better food.
Dear Principal Edwards,
I wanted to commend your school, P.S. 244, for your recent implementation of an all vegetarian lunch menu for the students. It really shows your dedication to caring for the children rather than choosing the cheapest option for feeding them. Thank you for setting an example for schools across the nation.
Since the new vegetarian lunches were put in place, obesity has gone downy by 2% among your students. Additionally, their test scores, attendance, and attention spans have all risen. Clearly, your food choices have helped your students both mentally and physically.
I appreciate that you have made health and nutrition a top priority for your students. As the first school in the country to offer an all vegetarian menu, you have set a new precedent.
