Target: National Football League Foundation
Goal: Stop cruel experiments on rats, mice, and dogs
The National Football League Foundation has been funding cruel experiments on animals at universities and laboratories across the nation. Most of these experiments are meant to simulate injuries in the football field. However, according to PETA, studies have shown that they do not accurately simulate the injuries sustained on by football players, and data obtained from these experiments have not helped treat players with injuries. The data on brain-injuries, especially, has not been found to help players with those injuries.
However, the foundation continues to do these cruel experiments. They have involved repeatedly slamming heavy weights into rats’ heads to create brain and spinal cord injuries and skull fractures; inflicting severe knee injuries on dogs, after which the animals are killed and have their legs cut off; and cutting open the heads of mice and delivering blows to cause traumatic brain injuries. Over $10 million of the NFL’s budget is allocated to this cruel research.
The NFL denies that the experiments are unethical, saying, “Grant recipients must follow existing industry ethical standards for medical research established by the scientific community. All grant requests have to be approved in advance by the institutional review board of the participating institution. In addition, we require any proposal to have been submitted for approvals by the institution’s animal care and use committee prior to applying for funds.”
The NFL maintains that this is not their problem, and that the fault, if any, lies with the individual researchers. However, it is their money that is funding these experiments, and the NFL can stop this cruelty. Tell the NFL to stop this cruel research that has not been proven to be effective in helping people.
Dear National Football League Foundation,
Please stop the funding of cruel animal experiments. Whereas you, as a foundation, are not doing the research yourselves, you are funding and allowing research that is very cruel to go on. Whereas you may maintain that it is ethical, you should observe what is being done to these animals and see if you can, in good conscience, allow this to continue.
Besides the blatant animal cruelty going on, these experiments have not been proven to be effective, according to PETA. Instead of subjecting helpless animals to these horrific tests, please reallocate your research budget to more effective research that does not involve animals.
