Target: John Kerry, U.S. Secretary of State
Goal: Protect agricultural land from the risk of a disastrous oil spill.
The U.S. State Department is currently reviewing the proposed Keystone XL pipeline, which would bring oil from northern Canada all the way to the Gulf of Mexico for refinement. Not only is it environmentally unsound to continue investing in fossil fuel production like this, there is significant risk of spillage that could directly affect U.S. citizens. What’s more, the oil coming in from the pipeline won’t even benefit the American economy, it will remain the property of a Canadian company called TransCanada.
Crude oil is toxic to plants and animals, and it can destroy crops on agricultural land. Despite what oil companies say about the safety of pipelines, spills are not uncommon; the Associated Press reports that some 292 pipeline spills have occurred just in North Dakota since January, 2012, and that’s not including another 459 “oil field incidents” that also resulted in significant spillage in the state. We cannot trust that the Keystone pipeline would be any safer.
Instead of allowing big oil companies to traffic their toxic product across the entire country, we should be turning away from fossil fuels altogether. The U.S. needs to invest in clean, renewable sources of energy, not agree to cheap bargains with foreign oil companies. Sign the petition to tell the State Department to block the Keystone XL pipeline.
Dear Secretary Kerry,
The proposed Keystone XL pipeline would be hazardous to U.S. citizens and the environment. Pipeline spills are commonplace all over the U.S., and allowing another of these to be built is only endangering the public further. This pipeline won’t benefit the economy, it will only give an advantage to a Canadian oil company, while putting American interests at risk. Do not allow this pipeline to be built.
The U.S. needs to focus on clean and renewable sources of energy. Giving a foreign company a license to spill oil all over our environment is the last thing we should be doing as a nation. Please consider the ramifications for citizens and wildlife that would be affected by this pipeline. Do the right thing by blocking the Keystone XL pipeline.
