Target: Senator Gail Schwartz, chair of the Colorado Senate Committee on Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Energy
Goal: Ban the practice of hydraulic fracturing in the state of Colorado
Oil and gas companies use hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) as a method of extracting natural gas and crude oil from the ground. The process involves building up extreme pressures underground in order to fracture rocks and simplify access to fossil fuels below, but this has serious impacts on the surrounding environment. Hydraulic fracturing can cause air pollution, groundwater contamination, and can cause hazardous chemicals to rise to the surface. The chemicals involved in the process are known to cause cancer, and the EPA has stated that those working on hydraulic fracturing sites, as well as those living nearby, are at an unacceptably high risk of developing cancer.
Right now, oil and gas companies are raising money to block anti-fracking legislation in Colorado, and unfortunately they are far outstripping the funds raised by public-interest organizations trying to promote this legislation. These oil and gas companies have a financial interest in continuing the practice of fracking, but the citizens of Colorado have their own health and the health of their environment at stake. We need to convince legislators to pass anti-fracking legislation.
We can’t allow big companies to make all the decisions that affect the health and welfare of Colorado citizens, or decisions that put our natural environments at risk. By signing this petition you are appealing to state senator Gail Schwartz to push for anti-fracking legislation, which would benefit all current and future citizens, as well as the environment as a whole.
Dear Senator Schwartz,
Hydraulic fracturing (or “fracking”) is a method employed by oil and gas companies to facilitate the extraction of fossil fuels from underground. Unfortunately, this practice causes major environmental damage and puts the health of citizens in danger. The chemicals involved in fracking are known to cause cancer, and the EPA has warned that those working on fracking operations and those living nearby are at an “unacceptable” risk of cancer. Please do the right thing and ban this practice in Colorado.
Oil and gas companies are currently raising money to lobby against anti-fracking legislation in Colorado. If they are successful, they will have bought out the health and natural resources of Colorado citizens, simply for bigger corporate profits. Do not allow big money to drown out the voice of the people. Fracking is dangerous for the environment and for the public health. Please help pass legislation that bans this practice.
