Applaud Ban on Wild Animals in Circuses

Target: UK Government, Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs

Goal: Raise awareness about the cruelty involved in the use of wild animals in circuses, and shed light on how governments can halt this abusive practice.

As of October, 2013, the UK Government has officially passed a ban on the use of any and all wild animals in circuses in England. Earlier this year, several animal rights organizations were working to pressure the government to pass the ban and were concerned that it would only apply to big cats and elephants, but government ministries have decided that the ban will apply to all wild animals. While a specific date for the legislation to be passed into law is still being decided upon, it has been confirmed that the ban will assuredly be in effect by 2015. Sign this petition to praise the UK Government for its decision to protect wild animals from having to endure abusive and cruel treatment in circuses.

The Royal Society for Prevention of Animal Cruelty, the most prominent animal welfare organization in the UK, is owed much thanks for playing a large role in not only raising awareness about the cruelty experienced by wild animals used in circuses, but also for putting public pressure on the government until action was taken on the issue. In addition to helping to get this ban passed, the RSPAC and the Born Free Foundation are also taking on the role of re-homing the wild animals that are currently being used in circuses.

The unfair life that far too many wild animals have faced by being forced to perform in circuses is avoidable. The UK Government deserves the utmost praise for setting an example, which shows governments of all other nations that they have the power to take action against cruelty and to protect innocent wild animals who do not have the power to speak for themselves. By signing this petition, you will commend the UK Government for their decision, which will also raise awareness about the positive role that governments can take regarding the rights of wild animals.

Her Majesty’s Government,

I would like to thank you for making the decision to ban the use of all wild animals in circuses, as this is a very important step in fighting animal cruelty and protecting animal rights. I would also like to praise your inclusion of all wild animals in this ban and not just a select few, which sends a strong and powerful message that all living creatures deserve equal protection.

By passing this ban on cruelty, your government is providing a shining example of action that all governments in all nations can take to protect and defend wild animals who are unable to speak for themselves. While a specific date for the legislation to be put into effect has not been set, I hope that you decide to take this action sooner rather than later, as it would make you an even stronger leader in recognizing and taking action against cruelty to animals. Again, thank you for passing this ban and for showing the world what can be done to promote animal rights.
