Applaud Activist for Standing Up to Homophobia

Target: Michael Ighodaro

Goal: Praise Michael Ighodaro for making a new life for himself in the United States after homophobic abuse in Nigeria

Michael Ighodaro, a gay activist from Nigeria, Mhas been making a life for himself as a refugee in New York City since 2012 after suffering abuse in his home country of Nigeria. Since seeking asylum, he has been steadily improving his lifestyle after starting from nothing.

Ighodaro was disowned at the age of 17 by his parents when he told them that he was gay. Although Nigeria has a fairly large gay population, the culture is generally not accepting of homosexuals because of religious beliefs. Because of this, Ighodaro felt the need to keep his sexuality private in Nigeria.

However, that did not stop him from fighting for gay rights. Ighodaro worked for a secret gay rights organization — a fact that was discovered by his home country in 2012 when he was mentioned on American media as a gay African involved in the International AIDS Conference. When he returned to Nigeria he was faced with constant brutal attacks because of his sexuality and was forced to seek refuge in the United States.

In the United States, he had been moving from house to house, sleeping on friend’s couches without a job or health insurance. However, he has since applied for citizenship and plans to apply to Columbia University. Moving to the United States was a bold move, and it is impressive that he was able to overcome his path and create a positive life in a new country.

Sign the petition below to applaud Michael Ighodaro for taking steps towards a positive life, to applaud his efforts as a gay rights activist, and to encourage him to continue to pursue his dreams.

Dear Michael Ighodaro,

We would like to applaud you for the bold lifestyle changes you have made, and encourage you to keep pursuing your dreams to achieve the life that you deserve.

You were not deserving of the abuse you suffered in your home country for your sexual orientation, and it was a positive and very courageous step to come to America to pursue a better life. We would like to welcome you to a country where you are more free to express your beliefs and sexuality and are capable of pursuing any kind of life you wish to have. We hope that you will continue to work for positive change for the LGBTQ community in the United States and internationally.

Thank you for your bravery, and for being an inspiration for people who are struggling to be accepted around the world.
