Target: Nora Vanatta, caretaker of Obie, survivor of canine obesity
Goal: Raise awareness about the prevalence of canine obesity and show owners that it can be reversed.
In the United States, more than half of all dogs and cats are obese. Given the epidemic of human obesity, it follows that pets would also be prone to adopting the inactive and overeating habits of their owners. As with people, dogs suffering from obesity experience serious health problems. The purpose of this petition is to commend a brave dachshund who is winning his fight against obesity, while also raising awareness about the problem.
When Obie was adopted by Nora, his current owner, he weighed 77 pounds: well over the 18 to 32 pound range that a healthy dog of his breed is supposed to weigh. Before being adopted by Nora, he had been tended to by an elderly couple that simply did not know how to moderate his food intake. As a result, Obie’s life was in danger. It was hard for him to walk, breathe, and simply enjoy life. Many people who came across Obie thought that there was little hope for him, but they were wrong. Since being adopted by Nora, Obie has lost 48 pounds, now measuring in at 29 pounds. He is finally fit, happy and on the way to being healthy. His success was the result of exercise, diet, and a surgery that he courageously endured.
Dear Ms. Vannata:
As you know, pet obesity is a widespread problem that affects millions of dogs and cats in the United States, as well as some other parts of the world. This condition deprives innocent animals of their right to enjoy life and their ability to be happy. Many owners of obese animals do not believe that there is anything they can do to change the situation. Obie, however, can change this. By showing that it is possible for even very obese dogs to lose weight, he is giving hope to other owners and their dogs.
It has been wonderful and inspiring to see Obie at work, doing his best to become healthy. Taking tangible measures to spread the word – such as Obie going on tour throughout the United States and having his own website – are incredible steps down the path of a healthy world. Thank you for sharing Obie’s journey with the world, both online and in-person through his tour. He is an inspiration.
