Target: United States Department of Labor
Goal: Require employers to be more accommodating for persons with physical or cognitive disabilities.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the unemployment rate is currently twice as high for people with disabilities when compared to workers without a disability. In a study by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, working-age adults with disabilities cite the lack of available, appropriate employment opportunities as one of the barriers to gainful employment. They also cite a lack of transportation and necessary accommodations to perform one’s work duties.
Many adults with disabilities report needing accessible buildings, elevators, or a unique workstation in order to successfully complete their job. Adults with disabilities who do not require these accommodations are more likely to find employment than those who need them. If more companies would install ramps or invest in an accessible workstation for their employees, more people with disabilities would be able to find employment opportunities that are suitable for them. Ask the U.S. Department of Labor to create incentives for companies to make their workplaces handicap accessible. Even if a company claims to not discriminate based on disability, if they refuse to accommodate a person with a disability in their workplace then they are not seriously considering the application of that individual.
Demand that the U.S. Department of Labor create incentives for companies to make their workplaces accessible to individuals with disabilities. Ask them to provide resources for companies to offer specialized training and support services for disabled employees. Non-discriminatory policies are useless if companies do not provide the necessary resources for persons with disabilities to successfully perform their job duties.
Dear United States Department of Labor Officials,
The anti-discriminatory employment policy, protecting people with disabilities against discrimination when being considered for employment, is incredibly important for people with disabilities who are seeking gainful employment. However, more needs to be done to ensure people with disabilities are able to obtain and hold gainful employment. The unemployment rate is currently doubled for those with disabilities, with many individuals citing the lack of suitable employment opportunities, lack of transportation, and the lack of necessary accommodations in the workplace as their main barriers to employment. These issues need to be addressed in order for people with disabilities to truly have an equal opportunity to be gainfully employed.
Please create incentives for companies to make their workplace accessible for individuals with disabilities, whether it be by installing ramps, designating handicapped parking places, installing computer software to accommodate those with visual impairments, or creating desk space for individuals in a wheelchair. Encourage companies to offer ongoing support and training for persons with disabilities, and to ensure they have all the tools necessary to successfully perform their job duties. Without these extra steps, people with disabilities do not have an equal opportunity at successful employment.
