Defend Mother Criticized for Being Physically Fit

Target: Maria Kang

Goal: Support athletically motivated woman who was falsely accused of “fat shaming,” after posting a picture of her body online.

Maria Kang, mother of three, recently posted a picture in a sports bra and workout shorts with her kids and their written ages beside her. The photo had the caption “What’s Your Excuse?” and the woman got thousands of hateful comments accusing her of shaming mothers who are not physically fit like her. Kang is upset by these comments as “fat shaming” was not her objective.

Many say that Kang posted the picture to show off or put others down when she in fact posted it as a source of inspiration for women and mothers. The picture was posted as an advertisement for her website, a blog in which she shares fitness tips with her readers as well as letting them into her personal thoughts. If she were merely showing off in her picture, she would not have a website dedicated to sharing her secrets and helping others to also reach athletic goals.

Although jealousy is a normal reaction for many people upon seeing a physically fit person whom they aspire to be like, it is immature to allow that jealousy to translate into hateful remarks and judgments against another person.

Maria Kang deserves both an apology for the hateful comments she received and a thank you for being an inspiration and using her experiences to try to help others. Please sign the petition below to support and defend Maria Kang for her motivated efforts to be an inspiration to women and mothers:

Dear Maria Kang,

The photo you recently posted showing off your physically fit body with your children received thousands of negative and hateful comments that were unjustified and unfair. It is clear that you were just trying to provide motivation to mothers by letting them realize that it is possible to get in shape, even in difficult circumstances with a busy schedule.

The fact that the photo was advertising your website, which displays fitness tips and personal thoughts, shows that you truly hope to help and inspire women and mothers. Many people became jealous of you after seeing the photo, which is normal, but the way in which they channeled their jealousy into hateful comments was not okay.

You are a strong woman who has worked hard to achieve your goals, and you deserve credit and appreciation for doing so. Please do not let those who judge you bring you down, and please keep being an inspiration for the ones who are inspired by you, and appreciate you.

  1. I think this woman did nothing but try to help people out there that feel it is impossible to get fit after having children. I also don’t understand how all this ‘anti bullying’ propaganda out there is being segregated in this way. Meaning it seems that now the people out there that are wrongly ‘offended’ by this pic and the caption that was posted are now being the bully, and no longer the bullied. Fat people shouldn’t be bullied, and neither should this woman who was just trying to show everything is possible if you work for it. The fact that she has a nanny or whatever is irrelevant. If you put your mind to something, you can accomplish that something. If you want that something bad enough, you will make that something happen. I think jealousy is a big issue here. It is very two-faced of all the people out there crying about how they’re bullied because of their weight, but look at how they’re treating Maria. Treat others the way you want to be treated. Ya’ll don’t like getting bullied, no matter the reason, and she doesn’t like being bullied either. Remember, she was just trying to help other woman see that things are possible, and she obviously never thought that things would get blown out of proportion, otherwise she would’ve never posted the pic or the caption. Be mature, and stop being so sensitive, and trying to turn things around because you’re jealous and want attention!
