Revoke Laws That Protect Agricultural Animal Abusers

Target: Animal Legal Defense Fund

Goal: Applaud efforts to revoke gag laws that protect agricultural animal abusers.

Although the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution protects free speech, “gag legislation” in many states has criminalized undercover journalism against factory farms.  Undercover journalism has already uncovered countless stories of animal abuse on factory farms: animals are kicked, beaten, tortured and thrown against walls by factory workers.  Not only does gag legislation create more opportunities for factory farms to secretly abuse animals, but it prevents freedom of speech, which is a fundamental American right.  Sign this petition to applaud organizations that stand up against gag legislation.

The Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), along with PETA,  filed the nation’s first lawsuit against ag gag legislation.  The lawsuit takes the state of  Utah to court for having no compelling reason to drastically infringe on a basic First Amendment right to free speech.  States pass gag legislation because factory farms will pay high dollar to keep their abusive and “cheap” practices secret. According to countless sources, including ALDF and PETA, billions of animals are suffering in horrific factory farm conditions.

Undercover reporting already exposed animal torture on factory farms. Accordingly to ALDF, thousands of chickens were left to starve, mother pigs are tortured in confining gestation crates where they cannot move, and cows are dragged to death on the ground.  ALDF states that “Ag gag laws aim to control our behavior by instilling fear of prosecution. This is legally known as the ‘chilling effect’ because it intimidates people from acting and gathering information—even in legally-protected ways… This is exactly what the First Amendment prohibits.”

Sign this petition to applaud the organizations that are fighting an unconstitutional restriction on freedom of speech that is also preventing justice for billions of animals imprisoned in factory farms.

PETITION LETTER

Dear ALDF:

Thank you for pursuing a lawsuit against the State of Utah for the gag legislation that has criminalized free speech.  This law is preventing journalists from revealing the truth about how animals are tortured in factory farms. This law is unconstitutional and must be stopped through the justice system. Than you for using your time and resources on this issue.

Sincerely

Please consider reducing or stopping your consumption of animal products to protest the cruelty of factory farms!

  2. Whats wrong with some of your American states ? I am from South Africa, thought we had problems here, but here more and more factory farmers are switching to free range.I know you have free range in America, but dammit can’t you enforce it everywhere. My goodness, I never thought this of USA!
