Target: 24 Hour Fitness CEO Elizabeth Blair
Goal: Fire worker and hold him legally responsible for sexual assault he committed on camera at work
In April 2012, Megan Hunt was sexually assaulted at a 24 Hour Fitness gym by a staff member who worked at the front desk. The entire incident was caught on camera. The manager at the particular branch did absolutely nothing about the incident even after Hunt reported it to him, and the issue was carried all the way to corporate headquarters. Their corporate representative pressured Hunt not to involve local law enforcement and informed her that for legal reasons they could not fire the employee who sexually assaulted her. Corporate was oddly silent on why they could not report a crime that occurred on their own property.
Hunt bravely tried to resolve the issue with the local law enforcement. Sexual assault survivors very frequently avoid exactly this kind of confrontation because of the nature of the crimes against them; this act alone is worth commendation. She was incredibly brave in trying to get her attacker held accountable. However, the 24 Hour Fitness Corporation harassed and intimidated her into rescinding her crime report and not pursuing any further legal action.
When Hunt began to recover from her trauma and wanted to feel good about her body and work out again, she discovered her pre-paid gym membership had been cancelled and the employee who assaulted her still working at the gym. So far, the gym has only addressed the issue with a canned message on their Facebook page that reads, “We take matters of this nature seriously and assure you that the alleged behavior is not tolerated. We are currently addressing this incident.”
Please sign this petition to urge 24 Hour Fitness to fire this employee and release any tapes or further information that would lead toward justice in this sickening case.
Dear Elizabeth Blair,
Recently, a woman named Megan Hunt was sexually assaulted at one of your locations by a paid 24 Hour Fitness employee. When she attempted to bring this to the attention of you and your staff, she was pressured to keep silent and end any legal investigation into the matter. When she felt ready to regain her body confidence by returning to the gym, she discovered that her pre-paid membership had been cancelled prematurely and that her attacker was still employed with your company.
Now, not only is your company perpetuating sexism, misogyny, and violence against woman by covering up a sexual assault, but you are stealing membership fees from clients and employing sexual predators.
Please take immediate action to fire the employee who committed the sexual assault, hand over to law enforcement any information or evidence that could lead to his arrest and justice for Ms. Hunt, and issue a public apology for your appalling behavior in regards to this matter.
