Target: Jocob Weinreb, Weinreb Management LLC
Goal: Condemn landlord for discriminating against a lesbian couple’s legal marriage.
Dava Weinstein and Dorothy Calvani have been together for nearly 37 years, and married legally for 2 years. Since 1977, the couple has happily resided in an Upper West Side apartment in New York City. Recently, when Dava Weinstein attempted to add Dorothy to the lease, she was met with harsh refusal from landlord, Jacob Weinreb, who stated that the couple’s marriage ‘was not legally recognized’ even after both Weinstein and Calvani provided correct documentation.
Housing discrimination has long been a major barrier for gay couples, as landlords have denied them housing on the basis of sexuality or treat them as though they are simply ‘roommates,’ further perpetuating prejudice. But in New York, where gay marriage is legal, Weinstein and Calvani shouldn’t have been denied the right to be recognized as a legally bound couple, deserving of the same rights as those given to heterosexual married tenants.
In an interview with WCBS, Weinstein stated “If something were to happen to me, Dorothy should not have to worry about whether the landlord will try to evict her because she’s not on the lease. That is one of the protections married people are supposed to have.”
Jacob Weinreb’s actions are a direct violation of New York renting codes and a breach of human rights laws. By signing this petition, you’ll tell Weinreb that his actions were victimizing, and speak out against housing discrimination against the LGBT community.
Dear Mr. Weinreb,
Your recent discrimination against Dava Weinstein and Dorothy Calvani is appalling, as New York has ruled ruled gay marriage legal since June of 2011, and therefore free from the prejudice and shortcomings once attached to civil unions. In a state that is progressive and forthright, your actions are not only anachronistic, but biased and in a direct violation of New York renting codes.
Regardless of your personal beliefs, Dava and Dorothy, happily married since 2011 and together for nearly 37 years, were victims of discrimination for which you should be chastised. Treating gay married couples as though their relationships are inferior to those who are heterosexual needs to end. Marriage is supposed to provide peace of mind and security for each spouse, but your recent acts have proven that gay couples still have to fight harder to avoid being treated like second-class citizens.
I truly hope that you think deeply about your actions, and that Dava and Dorothy receive the justice they deserve. Your unabashed homophobia and blatant apathy are inexcusable.
