Target: Liberty Counsel’s Mat Staver
Goal: Condemn Mat Staver for insensitive comments about celebrating LGBT History month in schools
All across the nation, LGBT History Month is being recognized at colleges, universities and educational institutions to respect and celebrate the accomplishments of members of the LGBT community and its allies, as well as highlight the success and the perils faced thus far.
What should be a month of tolerance and observation is slowly turning into yet another battle for the LGBT community as homophobic individuals in positions of power express their disdain for LGBT History Month on public forums. In recent events Mat Staver, of the non-profit litigation organization Liberty Counsel, expressed that presenting historical LGBT figures in schools is “[a] form of sexual assault on our children” and has told parents to “stand up and demand that public schools focus on the essentials of learning and not become vehicles of a sexualized agenda.”
Former pastor and devout Christian Mat Staver has made no secret of his feelings towards the LGBT community. His recent claims, though, are pompous, blatantly homophobic, disrespectful and plainly out of line.
Freedom of expression is one thing, but Staver has ventured into dangerous territory that is not only unfitting of his Christian ways but is a ‘slap in the face’ to the basic understanding of human rights and what it means to honor a pertinent milestone in modern history, regardless of personal belief.
By signing this petition you’ll condemn Mat Staver for his insensitive statements and tell him that, like any other month of remembrance, LGBT History Month is as relevant and important to our nation’s history and deserves to be recognized in schools across the country.
Dear Mat Staver,
Your recent comments about LGBT History Month being celebrated in schools across the nation were not only crude and ill-mannered, but showed that you were dutifully impervious to the seriousness of real sexual assault and not only have no interest in human rights but are apathetic to the relevancy of LGBT history. You don’t have to be pro-gay to be privy to consideration and courtesy; your statements are shameful and attitudes quite archaic.
Our school systems aren’t out to be ‘vehicles of a sexualized agenda’, as you so offensively put it, as LGBT rights, struggles and stories are crucial to the development of our nation’s future landscape and it would be ignorant to blatantly cast it aside, leaving the educational system unknowledgeable about the LGBT community. Frankly, you’ve treated LGBT History Month as a ‘non-factor’ when it has every right to be thoughtfully and intelligently incorporated into the nation’s educational curriculum.
Being gay is about more than sex and the corruption you indirectly declare lies outside of the LGBT community and is, unquestionably, within you.
I hope you take some time out to truly comprehend tolerance and rethink Liberty Counsel’s mission statement about being ‘dedicated to advancing religious freedom’ when we both know you’re only concerned with one religion’s freedom.
