Target: Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand
Goal: Investigate allegations of sexist and homophobic verbal abuse toward band members at football game.
Recently, members of the Wisconsin Marching Band reported being verbally abused by a football player for the Detroit Lions. The University band was playing at a Packers vs. Lions game when they were subjected to verbal abuse and homophobic slurs by Lions center, Dominic Raiola.
Raiola is accused of calling a female student a c***, and rudely questioning another band member’s sexuality during a verbal tirade. He then commented about the same band member’s family, including his recently departed mother. Finally, he made comments about another band member’s weight.
The University of Wisconsin’s Marching Band takes pride and enjoyment in being invited to play in front of such a crowd. These special opportunities come around only once per year, and are highly anticipated by the students. The band, quite professionally, ignored the insults and finished all performances, before reporting the treatment to school officials.
The verbal abuse that these students experienced was completely unwarranted and unnecessary. Especially in a work environment, no player should be representing himself in such a rude and crass manner. Playing at a Packers game is something that these students will remember for a long time, and the teams should make every effort to be kind and accommodating toward entertainment acts. Your signature will demand that the Detroit Lions investigate these allegations and discipline the player accordingly.
Dear Detroit Lions president Tom Lewand,
Allegations of verbal abuse by a Detroit Lions player have recently surfaced. Dominic Raiola is accused of shouting insults at several members of the University of Wisconsin’s Marching Band during their visit to Lambeau Field.
Raiola is said to have made homophobic remarks to a band member before insulting his family and recently deceased mother. He also allegedly called a female member a c***, and made rude comments about another member’s weight.
The University of Wisconsin Marching Band looks forward to their yearly performance at a Packers game. It is one of the highlights of the band program, affording an opportunity to the students to play in front of a very large audience. As the band members will likely carry the memory for a long while, it is important for the experience to be positive and enjoyable.
Though any form of verbal abuse is unacceptable, some of the alleged comments are particularly vile. Raiola’s comments reflect badly upon the Detroit Lions, Lambeau Field, and the football league as a whole. I demand an investigation into these allegations of unwarranted verbal abuse. I ask that if proved, the player be disciplined accordingly as well as deliver a public apology to the students.
