Remove Wikileaks from ‘Enemies of the State’ List

Target: President Barack Obama

Goal: Remove the designation of government transparency advocate Wikileaks as an “Enemy of the State.”

Wikileaks is a journalistic organization dedicated to creating transparency in government. They have never released information that puts lives at risk, and they have never committed slander or libel. According to the U.S. government, however, Wikileaks is considered an “enemy of the state,” a list that also includes the terrorist organization Al Qaeda. To consider a journalistic organization in the same category as terrorism is absurd and undemocratic.

Thanks to Wikileaks, the world knows about a long list of war crimes committed by the U.S. military in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the real estimates of civilian deaths during those engagements. We know about the abuses in the Abu Ghraib prison, and that top government officials condoned that abuse. We know that the U.S. government spies on the communications of its citizens. This is all critical information for us to have as members of a democracy; it is essential to the health of our society that we understand the cost of war, and that we know about the over-reaching powers of our government.

Wikileaks has done an incalculable service to the public by providing us with inside knowledge about our government’s operations. Without Wikileaks, we would all be in the dark about some of the most important issues of our time. Other news outlets have attempted to disparage Wikileaks, mainly because Wikileaks actually does what our news media should be doing by investigating abuses of government power.

To confuse journalism with terrorism is a major turning point in the political world. The people who want to tell us the truth are now persecuted like criminals. These conditions are not indicative of a democracy, and in fact threaten the very foundations of our society. It is of the utmost importance that we encourage transparency in our government now more than ever, and to do that we need organizations like Wikileaks. Sign the petition below to demand that President Obama remove Wikileaks from the “Enemies of the State” list.

Dear President Obama,

Recently you added the organization Wikileaks to your list of Enemies of the State. This was a serious mistake that puts American democracy at risk, as you have now designated investigative journalism as synonymous with terrorism. It is one thing to hide certain information from the public, it is quite another to persecute those who seek to tell us the truth. As citizens of a democracy, we have a right to know what our government is doing, especially when it affects us directly, as with the NSA surveillance programs. By trying to outlaw investigative journalism, you are threatening everything we stand for as a nation.

The American people need honest information about their government, and we are not getting it from any other news sources. In truth, we need more organizations like Wikileaks, to ensure that the public is informed and educated about the real dangers to our way of life. We urge you to please remove Wikileaks from the “Enemies of the State” list and end this persecution.
