Ensure Support for Indian Victims of Sexual Assault

India Riot

Target: President Pranab Mukherjee

Goal: Demand that Indian authorities fully and impartially investigate all sexual assault crimes in Uttar Pradesh, India

In the wake of the riots in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, India, violence has erupted in the form of sexual assault and gang rape. Indian authorities needs to conduct a full and impartial investigation and prosecute those who are responsible for the violence.

In September, 2012, communal violence erupted in Muzaffarnagar district, killing more than 50 people and displaced thousands of residents. The violence was sparked after Hindu and Muslim communities clashed violently. Human rights activists are clamoring that shelter and compensation be given out to those who were affected.

After the incident, reports came in regarding sexual violence, and many girls were found missing. Only five reports have come in about gang rape, although human rights activists are urging other victims to speak up. Activists who have visited the area reported that many women have suffered sexual assault, but won’t report the crime to authorities for fear of stigma, reprisals, and a lack of faith in their police force and officials. One women, who was threatened by five men with weapons, was taken inside her home and raped. She reported the incident three weeks after it happened out of fear. By not reporting these crimes, these women fail to get the necessary help and counseling needed to recover. It is crucial that Indian authorities respect women and acknowledge that they have been wronged, and prosecute the individuals who sexually assaulted them. Dear President Pranab Mukherjee,

I am writing this letter to express concern over the women who became victims of sexual assault and gang rape during the riots in Uttar Pradesh. I realize that there have only been five reports of gang rape, but activists believe that the number is higher. I implore you to support sexual assault victims and ask them to step forward and report the crimes. I also ask that you thoroughly investigate and prosecute those responsible for the suffering of these women.

Many victims will not report about rape or other related crimes because they are afraid of stigma and they have a lack of faith in authorities. Please reassure these women and ensure that their cases will be heard from authorities, and also ensure that these women receive help and counseling.
